Have you considered that the "Fuck you" video is not about YOU? Or the idiots who make marriage laws in the US? Or homophobic bigots in general?
It's not about "advancing dialogue" or actually trying to change anyone's mind. It's about making queers smile. And it's working quite well for me, actually. I can do the nuanced arguments in another forum, if necessary.
If you don't get it, that's fine. I don't attend rugby matches myself (due to major Not Getting It) - but then I don't castigate people who do so.
Also, seconded, the suggestion about checking out the Derailing for Dummies article.

My Homosexual Agenda is very much like Emma's - D-rings are very handy. I've also got tattoo-like swirls on it. I don't have the studs, because that's just a tad too diesel for me.
I'm so glad I came out in the mid-80s though - my toaster oven is great, and I don't really like the sound quality of an iPod. What's pissing me off is that my cupboards are starting to fill up with waffle irons from all the recruits ^H^H^H^H^H^H proteges I've enlisted. I like waffles, but not that much.
As for whisky, I'm a very bad butch, obviously. I prefer the Speyside malts - you can take my 16-year-old Balvenie out of my cold dead hands. My femmier-than-most (heels to work, every day) last partner was the Laphroiag drinker, although I might have gotten her onto Talisker as well. Obviously the Homosexual Agenda is all about subverting expected gender roles too. How are we supposed to achieve any certainty in the world?!

I totally agree that that wanker should not have continued those allegations outside the confines of the courtroom. If it's going to appeal, surely it makes it even more imperative that these totally unsupported assertions are not continually broadcasted to the media.
Ok, in the courtroom, trying that line in order to get "reasonable doubt" established might be justifiable, if pretty damn skanky. Outside of the courtroom, there is no such justification.
Also, Mark, secret trial is generally regarded as an epithet, for good reason. Kind of like "extraordinary rendition". If you don't like how the media handles trials - personally, I can't stand the way it generally handles science - then complain about the correct object. But if someone arrests and tries me for a crime, I want the process to be carried out in full public scrutiny, thanks.

Regarding the female gaze in the media at the moment, I had a bit of a discussion about that in my own Dreamwidth journal just last week ... and yes, Angel totally sprung to mind for me as well.
I'm just surprised it's taken this long to fill the void that Playgirl left, although it seems that the new mag is a bit more indie and less twee than anything from the Hefner empire.
Also, with all the written smut being pumped out now, in romance novels, urban fantasies, and fan fic, it really shouldn't be a surprise that some women want some visuals as well.
Well, I'll go pimp it around my Kinsey-4-and-below mates - I'm sure they'll enjoy some new eyecandy.

...Getting onto the topic of relative "cosmopolitanness", Wgtn and Auckland aren't that bad. Ok, they certainly can't compete with the mega cities of the world, but in terms of punching at their weight (even at the arse-end of the world), I think they're pretty good.
Also, Wgtn, which is only a squidge larger than Canberra, is a metric fuckton more cosmopolitan than Canberra. Sure, there are a few big honking things here like the National Gallery of Australia and the museum, but in terms of the city itself, Wellers is really more comparable to Melbourne (although much more condensed, naturally). And of course the fact I'm currently homesick hasn't biased me in the slightest.

@Tom Semmens, I didn't realise that cultural jet-lag was a class-based phenomenon. Wow, it must mean that something was seriously up with my lower-working-class enculturation, because I've certainly experienced what Daniel describes.
As for "hardening up" and getting on with it, if you're so proud of our country, why are you quoting the Aussies (or, at least one of them)? Also, I didn't see the part where Daniel wasn't "getting on with it". Job, wife, house seems to be pretty much getting on with it to me. Some people can both do and think/reflect, it seems. Others may not.

I have fond memories, although I didn't get along as much as I would have liked. Although not ostensibly gay, it was queer-friendly and had waaaaay better sounds than dumps like Alfies, whether on the Cause Celebre or Box side.

There's no set rule but I find Large Gin, Bit of Tonic to be a helpful mnemonic.Nope, there's totally no rule, but that's a good mnemonic for general Friday night purposes. I tend to mix up the acronym randomly, myself, somewhat ironically. I tend to stick to "queer" most of the time, or the individual labels for those whose teeth that word sets on edge.
