Hard News: Media Take: The selling of…, in reply to
The only face out there around here was Ardern's.
Which was clearly a decision, and maybe inevitable. She was money.
And I think it's fair to say she didn't get a lot of value from her deputy. I have a lot of respect for Kelvin Davis – he strikes me as the most palpably honest MP I've ever dealt with – but he was terrible in debates and poor in media in general during the campaign. It's not really even his fault: two months ago he was a good MP who'd immersed himself in Corrections policy. Being a deputy leader in a campaign is a different skillset.

I was wondering Russell if you still hold this opinion after Marama Fox’s rather despicable attack on her electorate the other night.
I do, and I think she's a loss – and I also think this is worse than either of the two examples you linked to. I understand that they're grieving and why, but she needs to tai hoa.
She has backed off a tad, but I find it unbelievable that she read the mood of the people so wrong.
I think it was pretty evident that she'd got the mood of the people and wanted to go into coalition with Labour if at all possible. The Māori Party's problem is that her favoured coalition partner was also her party's real opponent.

An interesting analysis from Jonathan Marshall on Twitter.
First, which electorate candidates outperformed their party’s party vote. Then the same, with Labour + Greens combined, to try and winkle out the proportion that was simple vote-splitting on the left. Still pretty stark.

Righto – I don't have the time or energy to write something new today, so the thread is open again.

Kia ora koutou.
Just a reminder that the provisions of the Electoral Act are about to come into force, till 7pm tomorrow, so if you could please confine yourselves to electoral and poll geekery and no indulge in anything referring to the parties contesting the election, still less what you think of them, that would be much appreciated.

Kia ora!
Gonna close the thread, to make the gesture towards a law I suspect won't be there next election.
But also because I reckon we should have new conversations after 6pm tomorrow :-)

And as I’ve also said before, the advance vote total is heading for over 1 million. (I don’t think it will get very much higher than that, but it’s still comfortably on track for that target.)

Good points about TOP. They need to have the “don’t be a dick” rule as their first rule. I had hoped some of their policies might be picked up by other parties but the personality of Morgan has obliterated any beneficial contributions they might have had.
I think it's been their problem all along: all about policy, hardly ever about people. Morgan actively refuses to understand how ideas are made manifest in a democracy.
