  • Hard News: "Orderly transition" in #Egypt, in reply to Danyl Mclauchlan,

You are obsessed. My pick is that Egypt's troubles will be because of all the liberals getting in the way of the communists uprooting the fascists.

The farming sector is so underdeveloped in NZ it really needs a leg up.

Yes, there's an amazing lack of leadership and ambition going on.

I know what innovation means, it's a constant ongoing process in every business. But when it's used with a capital I, it seems to mean "investment in highly risky cutting edge businesses". I'm not confident in the government's ability to pick winners. It could, however, pick broad classes of R&D that have synergy with some of our existing specializations. It's still socializing the losses of R&D that will usually put profits in private hands if successful, but you don't do it forever, just long enough to kickstart an industry.

I see golden opportunities every day, but I resist - I don't want to devalue the word to the point where management will use it.

Well, I think that NZ needs a well-functioning stock exchange if we want a dynamic economy.

It's a good thing to have, makes investing in companies a lot easier*. We actually have one, it's called the NZX and has hundreds of stocks you can buy. Adding some energy stocks won't drag it out of the doldrums, though, that's a function of the recession.

*So much easier that it can be tempting to think of it as the sum total of all capital invested in business. Which would be totally wrong - most companies are not listed on the stock exchange.

The ability to take toilet breaks at will is highly underrated as a job perk, I've always thought.

You don't miss it until it's gone.

But I forgot to attach to the Property Developers the caveat of buying up and riding the wave. That is not productive.

You're confusing developers and speculators. Yes, they can be the same people but they're different activities. One is productive, the other is not.

The cliche'd English working man would avoid coffee altogether, instant or not.

Curiously, many of the working class people I know avoid coffee altogether. But their reason is usually that they can't just take a piss any time, the way office folks can.
