  • Capture: Dogs Love Cameras Too,

I kinda wish every New Zealand discussion about dogs didn't turn into a dog bite thing. :/

  • Capture: Dogs Love Cameras Too, in reply to Hebe,

one by one six buns topped with pink icing and coconut

I want to high five her. That is brilliant.

Ellie is half Lab with all the food obsession that entails. We once left some bread sitting on the stovetop and came home to discover the bread gone, the whole stove pulled over on its front (!), and a terrified dog hiding in the flax bush at the bottom of the garden. She got a little more than she bargained for there (but you'll note that she still managed to eat the loaf!).

Our girl Ellie, who looks scary but is sweet, and who turns 10 – 10! How is that possible? – in a month or so. This is from around 2003 (at Te Henga or Piha, not sure which), and although it isn’t the best quality, it captures the ‘running while shaking off water’ thing that dogs do. Ears! Ears!

  • Hard News: Free the Street,

I once drunkenly approached "Lionel" on Ponsonby Road and asked if he was going to marry "Kirsty". I was probably about 19. But I haven't really watched it since the mid nineties. I feel a bit bad that we lost touch and now my soapy loyalties all lie with Coro St.

  • Hard News: Disrupting the Television, in reply to Russell Brown,

    I don’t get it either.

I have an extremely low hey-nonny-nonny threshold, so I was wary, but basically what it reminds me of is I, Claudius, which can only be a good thing. I am a real sucker for evil political machinations and family plots. And boobs. ;)

(It'll have to go a long way to beat Roger Sterling on acid, though.)

  • Hard News: Where do you get yours?, in reply to Lilith __,

The disadvantage with astigmatism is the lenses cost a fortune. When I got a new prescription last year it was almost $400 to re-use my existing frames!

I have astigmatism in one eye and short-sightedness in both. I've worn glasses since I was ten. I get all my glasses from http://www.zennioptical.com because the last local pair I bought in the early 2000s cost $600, and I thought 'fuck that noise'. They take a couple of weeks to arrive but the most expensive pair I've ever bought from Zenni was about $60, delivered from Hong Kong. That price includes both frames and prescription lenses. If you have a vague idea of your ideal frame shape and get your prescription written down by your optometrist after your test, it's a no-brainer. </evangelism>

  • Hard News: Where do you get yours?, in reply to Simon Grigg,

Nah, nah, nah: With The Beatles is it I’m afraid.

Hrm. Unorthodox - but interesting - choice. On the shortlist for most kickass unappreciated opening song:

Plus some of the best of their covers in 'You Really Got a Hold on Me', 'Please Mr Postman' and 'Money'. And is 'All My Loving' the first instance of McCartney's exuberant walking bassline thingummy?

In sum, I disagree, but I declare your opinion valid. ;)

Revolver: it's the best Beatles album. I think we can all agree on this. ;)

My favourite comment on that remix, Russell, is towards the end and someone says something like 'nuff respect to the moptop massive'. Heh.

Righto, I'm off to lay down all thought and surrender to the void that is toddler swimming lessons.

    Gaylene Preston’s War stories

Even thinking about that film makes me teary-eyed.

  • Hard News: Some niceness is what I got ...,

The whole of Music From Big Pink is on YouTube as one clip, if you don't happen to be familiar with The Band and feel like a hassle-free taste.
