Or have we forgotten a certain newspaper that was determined to hound an elected mayor out of office because they really didn’t approve of where he was putting his penis?

Which kind of makes Keith’s point for him. Dirty tricks’ the book, may not have influenced the election but the dirty tricks themselves did. To use the Len Brown example you are illustrating this point perfectly, the MSM fell into line behind the spin like flies on shit and hounded the man. That, Craig, is the whole point.

    Meanwhile, back in Medialand...
    APN to rebrand as NZME.

"GrabOne is still GrabOne, NewstalkZB is still NewstalkZB and the New Zealand Herald is still the New Zealand Herald."

So nothing in it for those that wish to be well informed then.
    But wait... there's more....

Hastings said that the "me" in NZME. reflected the focus of putting people at the centre of the company's brands.

Great, but which people? inhabitants of Planet Key™?

The rebranding comes as an initial public offering (IPO) and sharemarket float is being considered as one of several options by NZME.'s Australian parent, APN News & Media.

    So that's a yes then.

...., will turn on National at some time in the future. And they will want another team - not to different - and I don't think it's going to be the Greens. The Greens just don't play football.

The next recession will see off National, they can't do the recovery thing well, no grand plans for all to fall in behind, just the few, for profit, which is what is happening in Christchurch.
And when the rats have left the sinking ship, as they always do, Fay, Richwhite et al and we are left with a stinkin' hole of a wasteland, Labour will come riding in on a wave of hope and glory, led By a Man who has the Knowledge to cope with our new found state, refugees in our own land. David Shearer is that man.
    Argue with that.

Not really. Journalists have to hold their audience. That audience is at least twice as much in favour of National as Labour, probably more.

I think the problem is the quality of our "Leaders", a good leader should have journalists in awe, a journalist should feel "Honoured" to be granted audience with a real Leader, hence the term "The Honourable". So, for a good journalist to be able to hold their audience, you have to have a politician that is deserving of the term . Whether that honour is deserved or demanded is a different matter but I think you must agree, "there's a shortage of them around here", as the wide mouthed frog said through pursed lips. (because it was the wide mouthed frogs that the... whatever it was that eats wide mouthed frogs and so turkeys and thanksgiving and... oh never mind)

but I'm really wondering if some people hereabouts would only be happy if Paddy Gower was chasing Judith Collins around Parliament with a burning pitchfork.

It would be a good start...

The leadership of Labour Party however isn't a matter where they need to be accountable to the public

Exactly. Labour lost, they are not the Government, they have not been accused of corrupt behaviour, there has been no scandal of conflict of interest, there has not been a suggestion of obstruction of justice, there has been no evidence of deliberate destruction of the reputations of public figures, there has been no reports of cash for favours. No, the party that did all that, the party that "won", the party that now governs is not being questioned, not being held to account, not having its corrupt leader challenged it is being treated like a hero.
And there is no point in telling the MSM to wake up, it doesn't work on zombies.

(Not sure what you mean by “have the time to care about the subjective”.

What I meant by that was when you are struggling you just don't have the time to think far beyond your needs, quality of life if you like. The subjective is the stuff that does not effect your immediate needs, global climate change for instance. This would also, I suppose, make the Greens less likely to be the heroes of the Right as they only care about short term effects or effects on their wealth.
