  • Hard News: A cog in the Mediaworks machine, in reply to Lucy Telfar Barnard,

I wonder if we have the same haircut

You have a lilac mullethawke as well?

It would be fairly draconian to actually ban the flying of any flag.

I think there's a difference between "legal to use" and "meets legal requirements".

Also, you would think the Navy would want to change their ensign as well, the Canadians did. It's not as if it was a lot of flags to buy.

I hope nobody dobs my hairdresser in?

But is a business an “association of persons”. And why do they have this legal protection, over and above trademark law?

I see there’s a $40 fine for wearing an unauthorised Scout badge… Dib dib dib

I believe the block vote was abolished and individual union members got to vote as affiliates?

  • Legal Beagle: Update: Into the River, in reply to Andrew Geddis,

How do they get promoted to be a High Court judge? Or do High Court judges get appointed directly from barristers?

There's a bit of a pattern here of NZ banning stuff:
    - this and other suicide incidents
    - Into the River
    - infringements of election rules
    - not to mention the unmentionable events in Northland

I'm not convinced that having our free speech curtailed like this is justified by Bad Things that would happen (ok, maybe the last one is to protect the victims, but not to the degree claimed)

Many things don't work well in the US, but the First Amendment does seem to - the place doesn't fall apart because people know who killed themselves, or because kids can read books, or make partisan tweets on election day. Even the UK doesn't have many of the proscriptions that we do (although it has others, like super-injunctions).

  • Legal Beagle: Update: Into the River,

Would I be right in thinking that in the mainstream legal world, if say a District Court judge were to climb out on a limb like this and make a tendentious decision that gets torn apart on appeal, then that would be a bit career limiting for them? (particularly if they made a habit of it).

friends in music who’ve been dragged into the “gossip” sections in more minor ways and hated it

It's avoidable though, I think. Dave Stewart has always managed it, despite being a hugely successful recording artist. Then you've got (presumably) 20 or 30 cabinet ministers kids you've never heard of on one hand, and Max Key on the other.

  • Hard News: A cog in the Mediaworks machine,

I think there's difference between borrowing a few grand to pay for the deposit (like I did many years ago) and getting help to buy a million-plus "big house" in Ponsonby.

And the whole narrative of the Nats is about "hard working keewees pulling themselves up by their own bootstraps", so it's useful to point out that it's really all about having the good sense to be born to rich parents

Given her record, I'm really encouraged by Pagani's assertion that Corbyn will never be PM.
