Good with lepers. Not so good with church leaders, interestingly
He probably wouldn't like these guys

Don't you go summoning the candyman..
How else are we going to get this thread to 80+ pages?

There is quite a lot of evidence that a Jewish religious leader called Jesus lived.
He's mentioned a couple of times by the historian Josephus, a first century Jewish historian who became a Roman citizen.
Tacitus, the Roman historian of about the same time, mentions Jesus, as well as the fact that he was killed by Pontius Pilate.
And Suetonius metions a "Chrestus" in passing when talking about the Jews - which some people have taken as a reference to Jesus. (though Suetonius is unreliable, being mostly interested in imperial tittle-tattle)
There are also references in Pliny the Younger and in Lucian.
However, little is known about his life or deeds. Most importantly, we don't know what his position was on s92A.

Why do people talk about death as passing on or over if they don't think there is a destination?
"Passed on" or "passed over" are common euphemisms for "died". We should be careful about attributing meanings to words or phrases when no such meanings are intended.

And what really happened to the historical Jesus?
That they nailed him to a cross is, I think, generally accepted by most historians.
As for his resurrection, I don't personally believe any of it, but then that's just my view.

When threads like this discuss matters of religion and belief, it's inevitable that people will put forward their own belief systems. There's nothing wrong with that. The blogosphere would be an empty place if people didn't express their opinions.
On the other hand, if people want to put forward their personal philisophies for examination, they need to be prepared for criticism. As long as its constructive and not nasty.

Hey! Some of us still like that stuff.
I actually still like King Crimson, though it's hard to listen to some of their earlier work without cringing.

Who remembers Alan Parsons Project and they mysoginisty hit Eve? What a crock of shit that was.
I too went through a prog rock phase, though it shames me to admit that now. For extravagantly pompous and pretentious lyrics, you can't go wrong with King Crimson's early work:
The wall on which the prophets wrote
Is cracking at the seams.
Upon the instruments of death
The sunlight brightly gleams.
When every man is torn apart
With nightmares and with dreams,
Will no one lay the laurel wreath
As silence drowns the screams. Here it is live, in case you haven't suffered enough:

I agree that for utterly shite lyrics you can't go past Sting - it's official.

No, you're too clever. The secret knowledge is that you only have to paste in the URL.
Thanks Russell. I'll try again
