  • Hard News: Bad Judgement,

The Tau Henare performance on Morning Report this morningwas the stuff of farce. I know he was biased because I felt he was. C'mon Tau, get a grip

Yep, they are an abomination unto the lord. Some years back, the EEO unit at the State Services Commission commissioned a publication about psychometric testing. I'm afraid I just can't recall the name of the psychologist-author. She concluded that their utility as a means of job choice was shonky, lacked reliability and validity and merely reinforced existing personal prejudices. In short, people could feel virtuous about discriminatory behaviour because it was "scientific" (not her words,) So when I heard about it being used again of late, I had a nasty suspicion that the ghost of all the discriminatory employment practices that we thought had gone the way of all flesh was back and making life miserable for various people who deserved better.

  • OnPoint: What Andrew Geddis Said, But…,

Hilary's right that they not only didn't have any disabled people's expertise, some on the committee eschewed it- one Catherine Judd's comments come to mind. But Sacha, a bit unfair to say disability groups failed to see it coming . They protested, but didn't do so very effectively, and the protests there were got too little airplay, as seems too often the case when something happens in Wellington.
I also agree that this kind of shabby treatment happens so often to disabled people and it kind of inures one to it. Good that you're outraged Keith, and power to you and your like minded spirits. Work in collaboration with disabled people's organisations to blitz this toxic piece of mean spirited, unsound nastiness. With, not for works best

Agree with Sacha. This is begging for a yeah right billboard, but apart from that somewhat embittered response to sophism, it is clear to many that police judgement often appears overly flexible and/or responsive to a very wide range of matters.

  • Hard News: This Is Not A Complicated Issue,

It's also staightforward from a rights perspective . Article 29 of the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (or as Australians call it disco) mandates it Article 29 says disabled people have the right to stand in elections, hold office, carry out any and all functions of government at all levels using assistive and new technologies. It's a civil and political right, so the government which has signed the convention, has to prtovide those rights now, not at some ill defined time in the future when the speaker is feeling less grumpy and badly done by. Do it now Lockie, do it now

  • Hard News: Angry and thrilled about Arie,

I just fail to see what on earth the police think they have to gain from pursuing the matter with such single minded and small-brained vindictiveness. Quite apart from the rampant injustice of their stance it is as much a PR disaster for them as ever was the case for Rupert Murdoch and his "News of the World" band. Can somebody go chase rabbits please-a multiple brain transplant seems in order
