  • Hard News: Medical Matters,

Ok that map was too simplistic, averageing China's whole area...

This more detailed map shows China's most densely populated parts to be equally dense as India+ western Europe, (and half of it almost empty)

My point is they are at least addressing an issue that is equally serious in parts of the world that appear to not be addressing it.

I just cant see any good way to address it more directly than making (non-threatening) suggestions....

  • Hard News: Medical Matters,

    Grant,

I think pretty much anyone here does not condone what China does to enforce abortions on the unwilling...

But maybe they are not taking it up with you because it's a complete side issue to the main topic at hand...

Of course 'pro-choice" means people should be free to choose NOT to do something as well as free to choose to do it.

As an aside, seeing as you bought it up... I think the fact that China IS willing to at least admit over-population is an issue is actually pretty admirable. Although I cant see any possible government actions that might address that issue, that wouldnt be pretty reprehensible.

As it happens, China's population density, while higher than ours, isnt that high by global standards. India and parts of western Europe being much higher.

  • Random Play: Carter The Unstoppable Dick…,

Sorry, I did not mean to imply that Rich personally was one of these intentional queue jumpers...

But the people waiting cant tell who's made a mistake and who's being a dick.... and while maybe its not being charitable, or having the best manners, to shut people out..... I find the psychology behind it entirely understandable.

    Rich...

if you sail past lots of stopped traffic in an exit only lane, and then suddenly realise you need to be in the stopped lane..... you might have made a geunine mistake, in which-case, fair enough we all do that from time to time.... but a much more common reason for that to happen is when you are too self-important to queue up and wait your turn like all the normal plebs... and typically those plebs resent the people who think they are too important to wait.

I actually think Auckland traffic is more forgiving, and makes holes and lets people in far more than it did, say a decade ago...

  • Hard News: New Sky,

How can you mention freeviewHD and "sky is a monopoly" in the same post?

I don't have Sky and I also don't have freeview.... and I may take up one of those offerings either soon, or when I'm forced to when analog broadcast gets turned off... but they ARE competitors...

Sorry... $10 per month. $10 a week extra would indeed be a steep price...

    Stanley....

If picture quality is not important to you, it may appear that you are paying an extra $10 a week for "nothing"...

Most people will feel they are being delivered a "better" product when they see the HD picture on their screen... and it's a fairly ordinary business practice to charge extra money for a better product/service.

  • Island Life: An imperfect use of a newspaper,

    Paul... I see your point....

But I think you'll find that it's the Herald itself that has found it's way into an alternative reality, rather than all of Auckland.

If another city's paper was so blatantly sucking up to National, National would probably reciprocate with it instead of the Herald...

Also, maybe there would have been a place for a "national" newspaper in the past..... but they all have web-pages now and I can read your local paper as easily as mine...
