And Clark's office says all advertising will be declared under the spending cap.
Do you mean, "we will declare all our spending, as per the spending cap rules", or "we declare all our spending was under the cap, trust us."
:) Just messing...

Fletcher, are you seriously telling me that you see no distinction to be drawn between an electoral agency trying to make sure the electoral rolls are accurate (rolls which every qualified New Zealander is required by law to be on), and political parties engaged in self-promotion?
Of course I can see a distinction..... its just you said you didnt want any tax-payer funded junk mail.....
political self promotion (at our expense) sux.
departments fulfilling their task. clearly 100% legitamate.Working for families information brochure..... ????
Labour self promotion or legitimately informing tax-payers they may be entitled to something they werent aware of?Some examples are greyer than others, no?

How about a zero tolerance policy towards tax-payer funded junk mail?
That's fine in theory.... but just like John Key's "bureaucrats" vs Labour's "essential infrastructure"... one person's "junk mail" is another's "useful and informative leaflet"
I mean, are you seriously suggesting we shouldnt have all been getting those nice little orange envelopes from the electoral office to make sure we were enrolled?

How do you feel about the speed limit?
It's a valid point..... but it would be a far closer comparison if the police actually actively looked away while you sped past, or directed you to which streets dont have policing in them...
Getting an abortion under current legislation is all a bit nudge-nudge-wink-wink... If you say this to us, then you'll qualify sort of thing...

Man I want to shop where StatsNZ shop. My 2 litres of milk cost me a heap more than that - up over $4.
Look closer...
Where I shop, you choose how much to pay.
Anchor/Meadow Fresh around $4.30
Signature Range ~ $3.90
Home Brand ~ $3.20
(prices approximate due to memory, but there's definitely more than $1 variation)It's all the same milk. It all comes from the same factory(s) and whether cheap or expensive, and it all has the same expiry dates (usually over 10 days away).
I choose to pay less :)
I wont even think about purchasing at a dairy or petrol station... I believe I may have payed over $5 the other day while not being attentive?

Hmm... I seem to recall a series of lectures/podcasts/radio-shows, partially finished, that might be described as the evolution of human energy usage, or similar?
It might form an entry into such a competition without requiring the author to undertake any new or extra work (apart from completion and maybe re-editing?)
I dont mean to nag... I love your (non energy) writing a lot.... but I'm fairly sure I'm not the only person eagerly awaiting the rest of it.
**REPLY:** You might actually be the only person eagerly awaiting the rest. However I am intending to finish it -- once Bob is a bit more manageable. I can't record when he's awake, and I tend to wake him if I try to record when he's asleep. Quite frustrating. And no chance of baby-sitters here, either.

But Russell.... theres good reason for that...
"entertainment expenses" are tax deductible because they are (supposed to be) a cost of your business ingratiating itself with customers and possible customers.... its a form of advertising....
In general, government departments dont have to advertise for customers... I mean, is the head of the IRD buying you a drink going to help persuade you to send more business their way?

Re: Bob's hoodie wearing...
He's deliberately projecting an aura of menace through his attire. It's harassment I tell you!
-
But Clark didnt just express dismay.... which (in my mind) would be perfectly reasonable.... she almost directed the police to take specific action.... and that IS going too far...

I'm having trouble with one of your statements....
7% of tax-payers have zero taxable income...
If you mean income-tax payers, then surely having no taxable income, they are not paying tax, and are not 7% of the people paying tax...
If it means other taxes, I'm surprised only it's only 7%.... GST catches anyone who purchases, no matter how they came by the money to purchase with.
Call me confused.
