I have trouble following Pagani's logic here.

He blogs for Stuff too now? How do these people choose their left wing voices?! This is beyond token.

They've screwed up so many lives around me and mine that it's hardly a stretch to think they might have fucked over the planet as well.

But they gave us George Carlin. I'd say we're about even.

He also said he wished that people got past certain perceptions of the church, so my guess is that, he knows full well. Apparently they've been turned down "hundreds of times".

A cult is a cult, from a state perspective. The only difference is whether you as an individual approve of how they operate, and that is entirely subjective.

Well, I'm no fan of the Dawkins line on religion - I think it's pretty bloody stupid to be honest. So-called rationalists have their own hang-ups, and political movements have their own irrational or quasi-irrational beliefs. Courting a religious group is no different from courting any other group of people that self-identifies according to a set of beliefs. But most religious groups also agitate politically, and it's the content of Destiny's political activity that ought to disqualify them I think.

My point is why do representatives of the state acknowledge any of these cults by attending their events?

Sure, but it's also important to recognise the vast difference between some of the cults.

It's a pretty big difference - I'm not aware of so much rampant homophobia, mysoginy and penchant for child beating on the part of Ratana. Was I misinformed?

Funny though how the first instinct was to prohibit the victim rather than the perpetrator.

Last year in Rosarno, a small town in the south of Italy, there were protests by African seasonal workers, the local populace (organised by the mafia) responded with raids and the police rounded up black people for their protection.

The thing is, we've been having this conversation for years, and we keep being told the same things (it's incumbent on us to be safe, we live in the real world not an ideal one, etc) and I am no longer sure how we convince people.

My impression is that people are being convinced. At least I know I was.

Did you have to? That was just before my time, but yes, seems we've come a long way [sic], through the hard times and the good, I have to celebrate you... sorry, where was I?

I think Megan might have been suggesting that there may have been some comments deletions in this very thread. I couldn't say.

It occurs to me that this wouldn't be a bad place for a shout out to Metiria Turei and the Green Party, with whom I'm not affiliated, for not sending an emissary to the Destiny Church Conference at the weekend. Seeing Shane Jones there was... dispiriting in the extreme.
