  • Up Front: The C Word,

So people become multi-class? You have to start at zero XP in the new class, though.

Maybe not multi-class. Just maybe good at faking it for one or the other.

Or maybe it's just a matter of not caring either way.

  • Up Front: The C Word,

As for changing class, I'm not sure you really do change class but making the transition from being able to buy one Greggs spice per week to just shopping for food you like is definitely a good transition.

I'm not sure you do, either, but I think maybe you develop the ability to move between them?

Oh, Lucy, you made me click on a link about economics. If you are going to call a link 'boots', the least you can do is show me these. :)

  • Up Front: The C Word,

Also, I'm actually not an investment adviser and realized that it's not something you should do without qualification.

Point taken. I just mean I would rather they spent the money on themselves than felt an obligation to leave me half a house. As long as I can have my grandmother's engagement ring, and a painting I love, I'll be OK.

Disclaimer: I bought a dinner jacket a few years ago because it was more cost effective to own one than to keep renting the damn things.

And if it is a good one, it should last you for years, paying for itself many times over.

At least, this is how I justify these things to myself. I am very familiar with the CPW (Cost Per Wear) Index. My favourite pair of shoes got down to about 14 cents before I had to retire them. There's still enough of my working class inheritance in me that I might spend $200 on a dress, but I will make damn sure I am getting my money's worth.

And if it helps, I intend to make sure Emma wears the hell out of her new dress. Even if I have to keep coming up with Very Fancy Party ideas to do it.

Can I just say? This made me squee!

  • Up Front: The C Word,

I guess my working class Dad trained me out of that by pointing out that he'd actually worked hard to get us into that state

Quite. I went from Linwood to a girls boarding school where people wore their collars up. It was quite the shock. And I never really fit in in either place.

I do have moments of thinking "Good God, I am horribly middle class." But mum and dad worked really hard to get me there, so I should be thankful for that.

I think for my parents, it came down to wanting to give their children better than they had. And no matter how much I tell them to sell their house and live off the money and _enjoy_ their retirement, they won't, so I am thankful for that, too.

  • Up Front: The C Word,

If she were still alive, my Nanna would be so viscerally disgusted by the amount of money my new dress cost, and its fundamental impracticality, that I'd feel compelled to go out smoking and drinking expensive cocktails and slutting it up with chicks in posh hotels just to rub it in.

    I'm in.

My shoe purchases work on a sliding scale to my parents. (even as an adult, which I understand is ridiculous.) If a pair of shoes was under $100 I tell them the true price. If they were over $100, I take off about 50. If they were over $200, I just whack off half the price, and pretend my gorgeous $600 boots were from Hannahs.

Of course, when my mother was here this weekend, she bought a pair of shoes which she told my Dad were cast-offs from me, so I learned from the best.

  • Southerly: Confessions of a Social Retard,

Yeah, because I remember Rob well from the Welly launch

Which means, Rob, you must have made quite the impression.

It's fair to say there's a reasonable amount of that night Emma fails to recall.

Also, the date is now Friday, Sept 10. We had to move it back a week to avoid a very eventful week the one before. We'll be seeing you, then?

Oh! It just so happens I will be in Auckland that day....

  • Hard News: My Mum and other good things,

Russell, I had my own sainted mother staying with me this weekend. I cooked dinner last night, for her and a bunch of people. There was a conversation between Mum, and a gentleman of Emma's acquaintance, that made _me_ blush. And that's tough to do.

I'm sure your mother would approve, really.

Emma: That's the one. But like I said to Jo over on twitter, it's not quite so fun when you hand it to me on a platter like that.
