  • Hard News: Compromise,

I'm glad the bill will pass, but for once I think the kiwibloggers have a right to their hysterical wrath: Key is leader of the opposition and it's his job to hold the governments feet to the fire when they're trying to pass wildly unpopular legislation. He's effectively traded in that right (on this issue, at least) for the sake of a few minutes standing next to Clark at a press conference and looking Prime Ministerial. If you ask me that's a really bad deal.

  • Hard News: Some actual politics,

    McGovern . . . is a Rosie O'Donnell type conspiracy theorist.

    DPF

McGovern was a mid level officer in the CIA in the 1960s where his focus was analysis of Soviet policy toward Vietnam. McGovern was one of President Ronald Reagan's intelligence briefers from 1981-85 when he was in charge of preparing daily security briefs for the President, the Vice President, the Joint Chiefs of Staff, the Cabinet and National Security Advisor. Later, McGovern was one of several senior CIA analysts who prepared the President's Daily Brief (PDB) for President George H.W. Bush.

I'm a bit sad about where this thread has ended up, but it's not too late to yank it back is it?

Here's a little (not unrelated, but deeply funny and bizarre) light relief

Out of all the jokes made on PA, some of them infinitely more cutting, this one gets all the attention?!
Makes you wonder if there's not some reason for it.

Sheeesh, I can't believe how this thread has degenerated.
Any of the precious and offended notice the title? Yellow Peril. I think that implies that references to ethnicity via colour are meant with just a little bit of mirth and irony.

I too am surprised at the turn this discussion has taken.
There is certainly a problem with all kinds of online harrassment, but surely a blog for Take Back The Blog, an initiative set up to show support for Kathy Sierra, doesn't need to be full of "what about teh menz!!1!!"

The course of this conversation has really proved Tze's points regarding the disproportionate amount of shit thrown at female commentators, especially if they aren’t also white and dare to challenge white men.

It's more than disingenuous to dismissively sniff that the Public Address Comments System is 'a white boy's playground', follow this up with the self-righteous speculation that this is because all the women are out 'teaching our children and nursing our sick' and then POST these insights on Public Address and act all indignant and bewildered when people take umbrage.

The critical response is nothing to do with gender bias - I suggest that if someone were to post an entry on this site pointlessly attacking another Public Address demographic - say, Mac users - for no fathomable reason they'd get an even colder response. The only difference is that the instigator wouldn't be able to resort to special pleading or hiding behind their ethnicity or gender as an excuse for their rudeness.

Given the billions that have been laid out since in the name of security I really do find that astonishing.

I suspect high value targets in Nebraska and Omaha are vitally well defended.

I don't see what's so offensive, or incorrect, about observing that comments threads on any political blog from the West (apart from dedicated feminist sites or dedicated ethnic minority sites) are generally dominated by white males.

If you are white, it is odd that you are offended by the term 'white', although I wouldn't discount the possibility. There's no way I can stop calling white people white though - perhaps you prefer 'Caucasian' or 'of European descent', but I think that's clumsy.

If you are offended by the term 'boy', it is odd that you don't feel offended on the behalf of women by my (and the other female commentators, and Kim Gordon's) use of the word 'girls' to describe ourselves.

Steven's right to register his distaste - if a right wing opinionist made generalisations about 'yellow gals' (or whatever) you'd be at the head of the mob with a pitchfork and noose, and I doubt you'd be sympathetic to any protests that the semiotics of the racebaiting were technically correct.

What are the women doing instead of commenting on blogsites? Maybe they're busy doing things that they think are more important . . . When I was asked at my very first Great Blend why there is a gender imbalance in political blogging, I hazarded an uneducated guess that women committed to social justice might actually be going out there and doing something about it instead, by teaching our children, nursing our sick, organising our unions, and occasionally getting elected.

Then again, maybe they're all out shopping or at Pilates class . . .

  • Hard News: The A-Word,

i believe that is called "damning with faint praise"

Shit. And I started out trying to be nice.

In general I like to look at opinions and comments about news and current events from people I disagree with. I already know what I think about political issues but I'm interested to hear from an articulate and informed person on the other side of the fence.

In the US blogophere it's getting harder and harder to find such a voice - the right wing blogs are either coming out for Obama or disappearing into fantasy land - but DPF still fills that role in New Zealand.

although, i haven't read him for about 6 months. maybe the level of commentary has lifted.

Actually I think he's kind of sliding; it's now very much a National Party Blog instead of the blog of someone who supports the National Party - but he's still head and shoulders above any other right-wing NZ politics site.
