So today the open letter from legal scholars has made the news (albeit not the headlines).
And Gerry Brownlee has responded:
"If they are worried about process then I think they should take themselves down to the people in Bexley, or Avonside or the other pockets of severe damage around the city and perhaps have a discussion with them and see how they feel about it.
"I am strongly on the side of people whose lives have been dislocated, not the hand-wringing academics who frankly are contributing nothing to the recovery effort." (NZPA)
What an obnoxious thing to say. What contempt for those who dare to question his powers, or Parliament's wisdom.
But don't worry. We can trust Gerry.

On list MPs:
Ever noticed that they are only ever called "list MPs" when they're in trouble?
Otherwise, they're just called Chris Finlayson, Michael Cullen, Steven Joyce, Jeanette Fitzsimons, etc ...
-
Logic? That's for high-falutin' lawyers and the like.
MMP is to blame for everything. Especially Hone Harawira. Well, I've heard it said often enough, it must be true.
I think it was Graeme who pointed out that without MMP there would actually be many more Maori seats, but that just proves you can't trust them high-falutin' ...
Australia does it better, apparently. Let's put Outback Bob in charge.

Craig, it would help if you took the time to read what people say before hitting the keyboard.
First sentence: about Hilary Calvert. Saying the opposite of what you have ascribed.
The rest: Not about Hilary Calvert.
ACT prostituted itself (arf) to the SST. This was a fake marriage, full of contradictions, and they should have been called on it long before McVicar's goon got drummed out of Parliament.
And if Rodney Hide continues to parade ACT as the SST party, he'll just have to keep defending Garth McVicar's brain-farts.

There is no public interest at all in the news that a lawful business operates on a property owned by Hilary Calvert.
But it is kind of interesting - no, make that delicious - that she is replacing David Garrett, the MP for the Sensible Sentencing Trust.
Who said this, in 2007?
"Lowering the drinking age, the prostitution law reform, compensation for criminals and parole are all examples of legislation that has destroyed the lives of many thousands of New Zealand’s young people".
Yep, you guessed it. A certain Garth McVicar, from the Sensible Sentencing Trust.

Herald:
Mrs Roy denied being behind the leak.
"I knew very little of the information released last week. It wasn't me, it wasn't anyone associated with me."
As for the dark forces; "I think everybody might have been reading too much Star Wars myself," she said.
Heather: "These aren't the leakers you're looking for."
Media: "These aren't the leakers we're looking for."
-
David Garrett has been convicted, Rodney Hide is on bail, but many of the guilty are still at large. Here's one of the ringleaders: ACT's President at the time Garrett was selected.
No alarm bells? Maybe the ring of a cash register instead?
-
I expect they did get over it.
Thanks to Garrett, it came back and kicked them in the guts, 20 years later.
But I expect they got over that.
Thanks to ACT (Hide, the board, the leaker), it's now come back yet again.
But they'll get over it.
Until the election campaign, when the media start ringing the family and asking "How do you feel? Have you forgiven him?", etc, etc.
But Rodney Hide never imagined this would happen, and he's very sorry. So that's OK then.

John Key is very happy with the National-ACT relationship. It is working well, and he is delighted to have ACT Ministers in his government.
Except Roger Douglas. Oh, and Heather Roy. And now David Garrett.
And, maybe soon, Rodney Hide.
But other than that, they're all fine.
