  • Cracker: Bye Wellington,

    Damien,

I'm a bit surprised a photo developer feels its OK to take extra copies of your photos and put them on display.

Doesnt that constitute a breach of copyright or similar?

I mean, sure its flattering to have others appreciate your work.... but shouldnt they ask first?

Do you get to keep the (somewhat pricey) blow-ups as payment for them using them?

  • Hard News: What the people want to hear,

basically $250 a month to someone on the average wage ain't going to happen.

Working For Families gives me double that for having 2 kids, and I'm right in the middle of that "average income"......

Obviously, more people will qualify for a tax cut than qualify for WFF.... but lots of people do have kids.... and WFF is "affordable" at least according to Labour.... They seem to be in the same order of magnitude, if not ball-park?

P.S. off topic, but related..... to those who claim Labour "bought" the 2005 election with WFF.... National's pre-election tax-cut calculator website was promising MORE than WFF for people in my position. How can you have "bought" something with the lower bid?

  • Hard News: What the people want to hear,

They need to state: YES, we do social engineering, we're proud of it, we think any reasonable government needs to spend time on social issues, here's why.

Actually... I think you can insert any number of Labour's policy objectives over the last 2, if not all 3 terms in exchange for "social engineering" in the above paragraph....

Labour has done a lot of "good stuff" with very poor attempts to justify/explain it to the electorate at large....

  • Hard News: What the people want to hear,

I don't see why all politicians can't be given a bit of the benefit of the doubt when some reported statement seems to be in marked contrast to their policy and/or practice.

For politicians in general.... fair enough. We all make the odd verbal slip.

For Key.... how on earth would we know if its in contrast to policy or not when there's almost none on the table?

  • Island Life: More time with the family,

it's too cold for boys to wear shorts in winter, so my lad will wear long pants?

Have you forgotten what you did when you were a schoolboy?
Bare legs are warmer than wet trouser legs in winter. :)

  • Busytown: Yes he can (or: Is McCain able?),

I think a Clinton-Obama (or vise-versa) ticket would be fantastic.... and hopefully neither's ego is too big to accept 2nd place (but there's a lot of doubt over that)...

But neither of them can admit it before they've lost....

If you really want to win, and voters are closely split... if you admit you could settle for second, the voters will no longer have huge issues wondering which way to go.... you'll just become a self fulfilling prophesy and get 2nd by admitting you''d take it.

Once you're the 'loser' VP could well be attractive... but while you're in the running for winning, you cant possibly admit it...

Craig... absolutely they will be pleased, and thats great for them.... but what about others in different states who cant achieve that same happiness?

The whole shtick about "human rights" is that they apply to all... with no preference or discrimination...

The categories we often think about that shouldnt be discriminated against are along the lines of sex / religion / race / and now sexual orientation.... but surely rights should also apply regardless of which state you live in?

  • Hard News: Strange Southern Superman,

Why on earth would it make sense to use one of the largest remaining tracts of state land that can still be freed up (at very little cost to the govt) to build 1400 homes that are not affordable?

Doesn't it strike anyone, even just a little, as a wasted opportunity?

I believe the counter argument goes along the lines that if you dont mix the 'normal' houses with the affordable/state houses you are creating a future slum area....

I'm not studied enough (or at all) in urban development to know how true or valid that is... but I've seen it stated before, and we've all seen whats happened in the UK to many of their housing developments (ie. council estates) of the 50's and 60's.

  • Hard News: Media 7,

You could of course, if feeling generous, just click on a few ads with whichever control key held down opens them in a new tab or window.... and then promptly ignore or close them...

I dont do it daily, but every now and then on sites I feel provide me with value...

  • Hard News: There's Always One,

I have a piece of titanium and 6 screws in my knee, shaped like a 7 and about 8cm on the long side and 5 across the top...

Been to Aussie 2 or 3 times now and never tripped anything... Strange because I have set them off with a forgotten couple of coins or keys...

I'm quite prepared to roll up my trousers and show the scar.... I presume they will be happy if any detectable metal is provably under your skin, as opposed to just inside your clothing?

But then, assuming security checks and logic or reasonableness go together might be a stretch?
