  • Hard News: Christchurch: Is "quite good"…, in reply to Tim Croft,

There’s some mention, but not a lot, of mixed residential use and while the new green space around the city looks nice in the daytime I wonder what kind of space it will be at night if higher density residential buildings don’t spring up around it.

The vagueness around residential development seems to be one of the key complaints in early responses. It's as is it's easier to draw plans with Big Things in them than to envisage how people might actually live in the new city.

Still, I suppose we can look forward to unusual phenomena of the New Zealand team alone winning most of it’s medals whilst sitting down, and the media presentation of this rare ability to win medals in what is usually a restful repose as an affirmation of our athletic prowess as a nation.

What an absurd statement. You and Rich should get into competitive moaning. You'd be unbeatable in the pairs.

  • Field Theory: Olympics-eve, in reply to Rich of Observationz,

Yeah. We had the world rowing championships right here in NZ. Same standard as the Olympics.

    Did anyone go? not many.

The 2010 world rowing championships at Karapiro set an all-time attendance record for the regatta: 66,000 tickets sold.

It lost $2.2m but that certainly wasn’t because spectators didn’t turn up. The organisers screwed up on costs, but lots of people went. Lots. They apparently even had a good time.

But sprinkle the Olympic pixie dust on it, and everyone’s super keen. Apparently it’s all about having something to talk about. If they made up an imaginary one, like miniature horse polo, or curling, I’m sure everyone would be fully into it, especially if a Keewee was in with a chance.

    Whatever.

Really Rich, you might want to occasionally pause and just listen to how bloody joyless you can sound.

Thanks Hebe. I'll either write something or persuade someone else to for the morning, but feel free converse away here.

  • Field Theory: And they're off!,

Aren't the judgey sports sort of the point of the Olympics, though?

It felt wrong yesterday watching S. Williams v Jankovic at Wimbledon. Switching over to the gymnastics felt more Olympic.

    That logo is everywhere.

Having read that the logo is a deconstructed "2012" I'm finally able to make some sense of it.

I'm still not sure it can displace the Lisa Simpson thing from my consciousness though ...

I must not go trolling the Kiwiboggers, I must not… Oh, screw it I can’t be bothered walking down the river to the next troll-free bridge.

It's really only the usual suspects though.

You’ve just got to make sure the bugger sticks the landing at the third reading, but (of course) credit where credit is due. :)

He's left himself a little out, but it does look like he's on board. I think this is very good news for the bill.

It really raised my hackles and (yes) I sincerely think there was some tone-deafness from someone usually a hell of a lot more prone to thinking twice before speaking.

Yeah, fair enough. But as you note, she was dealing with some fuckery too.

And there’s one massive baseline equality fail. I know it didn’t go down well around here, but I wanted to tell Helen Clark to go fuck a weasel when she said if civil unions were available at the time, she would never have gotten married.

You know why that irritated me me no end – there’s nothing preventing Helen Clark and Peter Davis dissolving their marriage and becoming civil union partners. But she’s was perfectly happy denying same-sex couples absolute, unconditional equality before the law. So thanks for sharing your unthinking hetero privilege with the rest of us Helen but you just didn’t get it.

It seems unnecessarily abusive. Clark’s on record as having believed the Marriage Act is discriminatory but that she lacked the political scope to amend it – getting civil unions through was hard enough eight years ago. There were neither sufficient Parliamentary votes or public support for amending the Marriage Act then. Now it appears there may well be both, it would be nice to think her successors in government would be capable of the political courage she and others showed.

So, no, I don’t think “perfectly happy” or “unthinking” fairly describe her view of the issue.
