  • Capture: Dogs Love Cameras Too, in reply to Jackie Clark,

Also, this dog is treated very much the same is any other guard dog I've seen in the village - that is, chained up or locked away when the family is home, and presumably allowed to run free within the courtyard when everybody is out and the courtyard gate locked. So, yeah, it's certainly not much of a life, but in context it's not bad.

What I find worse is a neighbour down in Beijing with a poodle puppy he allows to run yapping at any other person while he stands there looking stupid not bothering to do anything about discipline beyond a half-hearted kick in the puppy's direction when he eventually gets bored of it harrassing the rest of us. I yelled at him the other day to control his dog because I'm sick and tired of it running at my daughter and worried about the possibility of this behaviour continuing as it gets bigger or it perhaps, emboldened by its owner's inaction, one day taking a bite out of one of the neighbourhood kids. And there's no shortage of Chinese people happy to deliver a good, hard kick to a troublesome dog, so if one day it's harrassment of the neighbourhood kids does cross somebody's line, I'm sure it'll suddenly develop a pronounced limp. It's especially annoying considering everybody else manages to socialise and train their dogs well.

    Breaks my heart.

It occurred to me that perhaps me coming towards him with the camera might have had him a little freaked out. I don't think he's seen a camera before, and the only people I've seen approach him have been bringing food. But in the top photo, between that rough white board and the shed behind is the path to the toilet, so he gets people walking past him all the time and that doesn't worry him. But it is strange and sad, because all the previous dogs here have had the run of the courtyard and people to play with, while this one spends his days chained up there and mostly ignored. But we have had now three dogs disappear in mysterious circumstances....

It's been about a year since the last dog photo?! This one makes a lot of noise every time we arrive, but....

...I don't think I've seen a dog as timid or wary as this, and the worst I've seen it suffer is be chained up on this side of the courtyard and get told to shut up.

Oh brilliant, will she be posting some of her pictures?

Here's one she took of me holding her cousin.

Poor old Advertising started life as the humble act of notification

That would seem to explain half of how the French "avertissement" came to be a faux ami. Funny how "avertissement" moved towards "warning", while in English "advertisement" became a kind of warped "come hither". Perhaps the French are on to something.... nah, cos they still have ads, just as bad, just under a different name.
