  • Hard News: Again: Is everyone okay?, in reply to Matthew Poole,

    One seismologist reported on radio that they recently recalculated the risk of a 6m or more earthquake hitting Christchurch in the next 6 months as 4%. The next day it happened.

    [Redacted speculation]

    It’s heartbreaking.

    Sure is. Somehow it feels like we owe the people of Christchurch, even those not related or friends, the debt of spending enough time immersed in the horror of it all to reach a point of sympathy that becomes somewhat meaningful. Not sure I’m expressing that well, but it’s why I’m struggling to drag myself away, even though I have many other things I should be doing.

    Petra Bagust streaming on TVNZ. Doing a pretty good job, IMhO. Must admit I haven’t seen her in this role before. Usually watch TV3.

    do bear in mind that the RWC was shaping up as a factor in the city’s economic recovery from September’s quake. Seven matches, including England games and two quarter-finals.

    I actually thought that, and delated a sentence where I said ‘maybe in 6 months we’ll be thinking about the livelihoods of those living in Christchurch, but for now we are just thinking about their lives.’

    I’m having trouble thinking ahead ATM.

    Vulturous scum.

    That's the bit I caught streaming on TVNZ. Seriously? Cancel the damn thing, for all the people waiting to be rescued or families with loved ones in hospitals or morgues around the city care.

    Time and place. Time and place.

    And he’s also an Glenn Beck type who’s written what is tantamount to the Protocols of the Elders of Mecca.

    This from the readers feedback;

    Saunders, if I can put this succinctly, is a nut job...To put it kindly, the book is a mélange of right wing paranoia, and Islamophobia (Gordon Campbell, New Zealand)

    Tell us what you really think.

  • Hard News: Again: Is everyone okay?, in reply to JoJo,

    I don’t know how much use it is, given that much of Chch is without power, but it’s a bloody nice thought.

    Was thinking we could do something similar on here, but then thought, with a few exceptions, including two elderly people I know of who really need to get away for their own sanity and wellbeing, hard to imagine people walking away. Maybe in a little while though, as a form of respite. It would be nice to feel there was something tangible we could do. Apart from donating on the Red Cross page, which I’m trying to do now, but having difficulties with. Maybe overloaded.

    Since we are all decent people, lets just assume we're all a bit emotional. I certainly am.

    The thing that got me first, not necessarily most, was on the radio when a person called in and asked if he could make a community announcement;

    "Just a message to all the parents of room 5 at the Rudolph Steiner school on the field trip. All your children are fine".

    I thought those ‘what the fuck are you doing here’ looks last time and people clearly and visibly unable to get on with the job because of the crews last time, spoke volumes.

    Of course if he stayed in Wellington and sent someone else, you’d be complaining too. Stick to the human side of this will you, it’s making my already fragile stomach even queazier.

    If you had just seen the fly by on TV3, maybe whether the Prime Minister was there or not would be put in it’s proper perspective.

    It does get to a point where posting photos and links to such feels very different to last time. As Craig pointed out, for the most part it seems best to let the official reports come through to ensure safety.

    It is great to be hearing from those in Christchurch in regards to themselves or their families being safe via twitter though.
