  • Hard News: Blog About Cat,

@Islander - we have a Maine Coon. He catches the occasional bird but not huge numbers (and we're in an area stuffed with birds). It's not for want of trying though, he hangs out on the roof watching the nest that's in the corner of the gutter. He's the most chilled-out cat I've ever met, he's handled three house moves and two small children with no stress whatsoever. Tends to just hang out with neighbourhood cats rather than trying to argue with them. Will make a beeline for the lap of whoever in the house is most unlikely to want him, particularly loves allergy sufferers and will seek them out.

  • Hard News: Everyone's a critic,

Yep, went to Monsoon Poon for a birthday dinner a little while after it opened, with a (well behaved) 1 year old kid. Sitting right next to the maître d's spot at the front there. After the entrees happened, nothing... for half an hour, then 45 minutes, and on it went. The Beer Lao was past it's use-by date, and so was the replacement. They kept telling us our meals were just being finished off, which is a hilarious thing to say when you can see exactly what's being prepared in the kitchen, and it's not your order. As we got up to leave in disgust they suddenly appeared with the (distinctly average) meal. An email to the manager got the corporate equivalent of "yeah bummer, we're still sorting some teething troubles out" in reply. So top 50, my ass.

All up, the highlight of the evening was running into Billy Connolly walking past outside as we wandered the small son up and down outside for the umpteenth time. That was alright :)

  • Hard News: RT: Eyjafjallajokull,

Last time we were in that earthquake simulator at the museum everything was going smoothly, until the first big bump hit (and it's a goodie) and somebody's grandmother sitting on the couch yelled "oh FUCK!" at the top of her lungs. Oddly, the kids were fine.

  • Hard News: The Exploding Banana Scandal,

What's stopping the NZRU from just revoking the SST's press credentials on the spot? That I'd like to see.

  • Cracker: Wallywood,

I'll put my Pixies ticket up for grabs as well - GA at the Vector - because I fell down the front steps the other day and my ankle would really prefer I didn't go tonight. The rest of me is still keen, but it looks like the ankle will win out.

I think my email addie's on the left there if you want it, $100.

  • Hard News: Fun like the old days,

some tech outfit were suing another for "hacking" their super-duper system and writing an alternative client for it - perhaps a source control system?

It wasn't suing, but the outfit in question was BitMover, the makers of BitKeeper, and they got the shits with the Linux kernel developers when a third party did exactly what you described above. Way too many details here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BitKeeper.

And that's where "git" comes from. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Git_(software)

  • Hard News: Auckland: where only one man votes,

I mean, ACT is at 2% or thereabouts and is not even represented in Cabinet

Makes me wonder why their leader gets to play with Auckland like it's Lego.

  • Hard News: Space for Ol Dat I See,

Huh... I didn't even know putting road tyres on a MTB had a name :) We rode round the South Island like that in '95 or so and got a few strange looks but it was definitely the comfortable way to go. When I buy my next bike it'll be the same configuration for sure.

I seem to have been out of the country when Dylan Taite died so I didn't know. That's a shame. I met him once, when I was young and working in Farmers in Hamilton. He must have been in a crappy mood because he was a real prick that day, unfortunately, but I still loved his work.

Love the zoo. I think some time between 2 and 3 is where appreciation of the animals starts to kick in, before that they don't really seem to recognize the shapes as animals. Our 2-year-old fed the giraffe there last week and also loved it, his new toy giraffe is a constant companion.

  • Speaker: North versus South, Part 1,

But I'd just like to point out, (mainly to non Aucklander's I guess?) that there are many and various ways to exist in Auckland, and not all of them fit the stereotype presented here...

    +1, what he said.
