  • Hard News: A Public Address public appeal,

Modest deposit made, as per my current means. I would happily contribute again to keep you on air Russell. You are a shining light in a sometimes bleak media world.

  • Hard News: Not so insane,

There is nothing like an alcoholic (Pam) getting hysterical about “harmful drugs”. The new Act is a small step in the right direction but – he said, sounding like broken record – you simply can’t have a rational discussion about drug management unless you include alcohol. And nobody in government is ready to go there yet as witnessed by their substantial back down on the recommendations of the commission last year.

  • Hard News: Event Season, in reply to Ian Dalziel,

And a competition to design the best shore-based trebuchet for launching paint bombs at the boats. Yes, I can see it all coming together now. Perhaps a flock of mini-subs prowling the waters ?

  • Hard News: Event Season, in reply to Sofie Bribiesca,

I fear that I have let the country down by not creating many jobs with my proposed regatta - no factories building giant catamarans or chase boats or extended shore crew. I'll have to have a rethink on how to create more opportunities for the workers.

  • Hard News: Event Season,

It's great to see Labour/Greens making some progress but it's going to be a long, hard year in 2014 with National repeating endlessly ". . . the extreme left coalition . . ." and trying to scare the pants off everyone about return to nanny state, etc. Dave C and Russell N are going to have to hone the message very carefully and not get distracted by Jonkey's scare tactics. As for the sailing, those big cats are amazing but, I think the next cup should be raced in Optimists off Mission Bay with one sailor per boat, e.g. Dean Barker vs whoever. And each skipper gets a paintball gun so that, as they cross on tacks, they shoot at each other and score additional points for hits on the opposing skipper. So, you may cross the line first but if you have received 10 head shots, you might not win the race.

  • Hard News: This time it's Syria,

Any military action from "the West" is almost certain to kill someone in Syria which will basically add up to state-sponsored execution again, a la Osama bin Laden. The USA (and tag along UK) don't seem to think that evidence and presumption of innocence apply to anyone outside of said "West". How easy would it be to establish the details around this situation and then bring someone to trial for the deaths? Virtually impossible I would have to guess but does that make it OK to pick someone/something and blow it up so that we can show our disgust at these people being gassed?

  • Hard News: So long, and thanks for all…,

"I don’t think that’s a problem for Labour – people leaving Labour to vote Green is OK, as they’re coalition partners next government. Likely left voters not voting is a problem, people leaving Labour to vote NZ First, Peter Dunne, or National/Act is a problem."

Agreed to a point but Labour needs to be seen to be bigger and stronger in order to motivate the struggling classes to vote I think. It's lost some mana over the last five years and that might affect its ability to get the workers to the polls.

Jacinda Ardern for leader, Phil Twyford for deputy. Give the Labour party the really big shake up it needs. It's going to take a lot to stop me from drifting to Greens next election.

  • Hard News: The GCSB Bill: eleventh-hour arguments,

You've seen how unpleasant John is with anyone who is criticising his bill so imagine what life would be like for anyone within National who voted against it. I think a very nasty accident would befall them.
