  • Hard News: When that awful thing happens,

Steve Parks - I really thought the use of a Registry would be self evident as the comparison to cars was priviously stated by Alpers and so left it out to avoid repition.

I consider my evidence based arguement more persuasive than an opinion based one, but over to you.

Yeah I figured you thought it was self evident, hence my making the point you seemed to think it was self evident. I was asking for a counter to Matthew’s arguments that it is not such a good idea as it may seem. I consider Matthew’s arguments to be both evidence based and reasonable. (The evidence you cite seems to be his also: you cite the Mabey example, he points out that those guns were already registered.)

  • Hard News: When that awful thing happens,

License all owners & Registar of all weapons...

Any chance those of you still putting forth the "Register all weapons" idea could actually take the time to offer some sort of counter-argument to Matthew Poole? Rather than just stating it as if it is obviously some kind of solution when Matthew has repeatedly given clear reasons why it would make little to no difference. If you have counter arguments I'm all for hearing them.

Utter mischaracterisations and over-reactions to the most banal of comments?

I agree that your comments are banal, Grant.

  • Hard News: When that awful thing happens,

...never mind the tone of my post.

It wasn't just the tone, buddy, it was also the content.

How do people know in this thread that the police doing their routine 'lets fuck up the life of a cannabis dealer/grower' were not gloating at him and letting him know he was in a heap of shit and would have his house taken of him ?????. How does anyone know the cops were not acting like arseholes ?????

Yes, that must it: The cops, and the civilian he shot, and all the other people he shot at, were acting like arseholes. Seriously, your baseless, moronic speculation is not helping your case.

He must be the first man ever to think that.

Key is beefing up pace for funding in the budget for tasers. Typical

Beefing up pace to fund tasers? Weird.

But then I don't understand modern art.

  • Hard News: Goodie Bag!,

Martin Campbell is directing and Grant Major is there as DOP.

Do you mean Grant Major is there as Production Designer? As far as I know, he's not done DOP work before...

Robyn just picked up several coolness points.

That must be why her STARmeter went up another 1% this week.

If you can't rely on the people who write dictionaries to be pendants... the world really is ending.

I know. They probably also give "imply" as a definition of "infer."

Well, they certainly have given in to those who misuse "factoid" to mean "an insignificant or trivial fact." That definition is even given first in this Dictionary.com entry.

At least they get it right later:

    fac·toid (fāk'toid)
    n.

    1. A piece of unverified or inaccurate information that is presented in the press as factual, often as part of a publicity effort, and that is then accepted as true because of frequent repetition.

    2. Usage Problem A brief, somewhat interesting fact."...

... "The -oid suffix normally imparts the meaning "resembling, having the appearance of" ."

  • Field Theory: Things that go bump in the…,

Re: "Blink" - very much so. Reminds me of the old Buffy episode with the Gentlemen, where everyone loses their voice. That one managed to be both the funniest and the scariest episode of the season - possibly the series.

Careful Josh, that's my geek button you're pushing.

We just rewatched Hush with the kids, and it was as I remembered it - creepy and hysterically funny. Joss wrote it because people kept telling him how great his dialogue was - so he wrote an episode with almost no speech.

Interesting that ‘Hush’ was brought up in light of ‘Blink’. In Blink, the way to stop the statues is to not blink; in Hush, the villains of the piece had no eyelids and therefore never blinked.

Anyway, it was an excellent episode. Great ending, too (after all that, Buffy and Riley sit at the end, lost for words). As for “funniest and the scariest”, I think it probably was the scariest as Josh says, but then Buffy was not really a show I watched primarily for the scare factor. It was certainly pretty funny. I think the funniest episode (at least funniest non-Whedon written ep) was The Zeppo by Dan Vebber.
