  • Hard News: Do you like what we've done…,

(Bug-spotting note: from where I sit, everyone apparently posted “seconds ago.” Or is it a late-night PAS clusterhug, NZT, and you’re all still awake?)

No, bug; I see my last post as seconds ago, and it was more like two hours.

I’d hate to think that what it would be like with AdBlock enabled.

Really, really white. A herd of polar bears could be hiding on the screen and you'd never know. (Hmm. Herd sounds wrong. What is the collective noun for bears, anyway?)

Or are you arguing, like the Chinese government, that the poor shouldn’t worry their pretty little heads about detention without trial for months on end, for example, as long as there’s rice in the bowl?

I'm not familiar enough with the domestic policy of Blair's government (which wasn't, in the last election, seeing as he'd quit) to comment, though I'm willing to accept they may have been entirely unhelpful in that regard. But that doesn't mean that what the ConDems are doing - which is nothing short of an outright economic attack on anyone who can't fight back - is acceptable, just because they're not Blair. Rather the opposite.

“Go on, flag Russell’s comment as inappropriate, you know you want to”

We start that, we might as well just flag the whole site as inappropriate and get it done with, given a few threads we've had. (But. You know. The awesome kind of inappropriate.)

And yet rolling back Labour's human rights abuses, more traction on electoral reform than Labour had after spending the 90s promising it, and no illegal wars started.

That's right: it's totally cool to leave the poor and disabled to suffer as long as you don't start any actual shooting wars while doing so.

  • Hard News: Unreasonable people vote,

Seriously. Every winter I wonder why on earth anyone settled here in the first place. In their shoes I'd be hiking south as fast as I could.

I believe a lot of the Mayflower Pilgrims basically froze to death because they were expecting (reasonably, really) English-style winters. Which was somewhat not what they got.

Also - without a word of a lie - the same indoor temperature that people want in winter is typically considered unbearable in summer and addressed with heavy doses of a/c.

Which actually gets seriously uncomfortable in the summer because you have to keep cardigans and jerseys around indoors to not freeze to death, the a/c is on so high. Admittedly some of that is psychosomatically induced by the outdoor temperatures, but during the brief heatwave I experienced in August I actually most liked being at home, where we practiced traditional Kiwi methods of cooling: opening all the windows and putting a fan on. Cool enough to be bearable, not so cold that going outside was a complete shock to the system.

now that's something i think we can all love and appreciate

Personally, I always wanted a dragon. (Teenagers, take note: declarations like this are an excellent tactic for messing with your school counsellor.)

(Their *trailers* have central heating and cooling.)

As I am becoming keenly aware, this seems less stupid when you realise exactly how hot and cold it can get in some parts of the country. I can put a jacket on, but the pipes can't.

    Edit - o yeah. Y'know, there's this thing called Wi-ki-pae-di-a?
    Marvellous eh?

Had a decent argument about the marvellousness thereof at a conference last weekend. Apparently the tight-knit circle of nerds who control Wikipedia in their iron fist will callously delete anything scientists try to add to make it more useful and/or accurate, laughing as they do so. Or...something of that nature.

  • Hard News: Unreasonable people vote,

I gather Fox News has been airing it like a true thing.

Of everything in New Zealand, some days I miss the Broadcasting Standards Authority the most.

  • Hard News: Unreasonable people vote,

So,, when I go home this afternoon, what channel should I be watching for the good coverage?

During the last Presidential election we managed to stream CNN on the internet.
