  • Up Front: Say When, in reply to Jackie Clark,

    She was on Graham Norton too recently. (Maybe it was a repeat?) Thought she was awesome.

  • Up Front: Say When, in reply to Megan Wegan,

    Yeah, it’d be different if we were talking about Roseanne Barr, who is a similar age.

    Maybe as a counter, counter-argument, Cher. Last Friday on Graham Norton they had Cher with Dawn French. Frankly, I'd much prefer to look at Dawn French, who is totally comfortable in her skin, than Cher with her stiff upper lip, and face that doesn't move when she laughs. As an actress, I can admire her, although probably won't be seeing Burlesque until it reaches TV, but Mirren and a few other historical sex symbols, seem to be aging much more gracefully, without wearing a Mask.

  • Up Front: Say When, in reply to Bart Janssen,

    As an aside I love shopping for clothes with my wife and will happily stand for hours watching her try on things, offering opinions and carrying bags. I’m sure there is a career doing that.

    +1
    Sometimes I like it so much I go shopping for dresses without her. True story.

  • Speaker: Medical Journal, Chapter V, in reply to Ross Mason,

    The first part is an oldie and a goodie. The rest I hadn't seen before but could be better.

    Is it possible that using this text, as I did, as a resource to teach English to foreign students is a form of cultural imperialism? At the time it just seemed funny, and the students certainly laughed quite openly, but now I see it in another context, I'm a bit worried.

    Maybe just 'cricket imperialism'?

  • Field Theory: Japan Part Two: It's…, in reply to Hadyn Green,

    Didn’t arrive until I was 22. Was fortunate to travel back several times for work in my 30s with a ‘badass best friend’ to show me around. ’twas indeed a different place.

    Mind you, same badass friend was there at 22, and the trouble we got into then was much more life altering, and life threatening, than anything we did later. The fact we were both married by then, and far from badass, might have had something to do with it.

    We avoided Roppongi most of the time. Ebisu, Omotasando, and other areas that can’t remember, were more our scene.

  • Up Front: Say When, in reply to Emma Hart,

    Let me bring the poem this time:

    Had thought of that, but was reminded of my live cast from the BDO where I wrote;

    I am old I am old
    I can’t reach the bottom of my trousers to roll,
    cause my sciatica is killing me

    Seems I misremembered the 'grow' bit.

    Like a patient etherized upon a table;

    Thread merge.

    Mine was a cracker.

    Mine too.

    I'm just a little bit amused by the number of men who have jumped over here from the V thread.

    Seems we like a good discussion about male sterility, almost as much as cleavage. Who knew?

    Can’t we just go to the cricket and talk about field placements?

    But, but, I’ve done that with Emma and Megan before (Ok Hayden was there too), so that’s not sufficiently blokey, all in all.

    The “birds and the bees” discussion in my early puberty was done by my mother, while Dad hid.

    It was at this time a book turned up next to the Tom Robbins on the shelf that promised to 'Make it happy'.

  • Muse: TV Review: Good Gods Almighty!, in reply to nzlemming,

    The fanboy in me was keen for more DW

    Watched the DW Christmas Special the other day, and apart from the fact anything with Michael Gambon gets me excited, it held together pretty well, and broke some of the Christmas Carolly traditions, while also paying homage to them.
