to go into schools to warn students about all the 'gratuitous sex and violence' on TV.

The "smacking" referendum is coming up soon.
Previously it looked like Key could just ignore it. Probably a low turnout, a silly question, a law that changes little ... no need to revisit The War of 2007 all over again. Mumble something soothing about "listen" and "monitor" and then leave it behind, with a sigh of relief.
Appointing Rankin makes that harder. The media have their go-to person, all ready with a headline quote, with an official title to boot. If National want to dig up Section 59 again, this is the way to do it. But why would they?

It was Duncan Macdonald. Apologies if I got his title wrong.

I hope these are all frontline appointments.
Front office, back line, backroom, front of house, back to front, Y-fronts ...

David Shearer's interview with Sean Plunket this morning was just daft. Shearer tried to explain how the respective costs had been fiddled and Plunket basically saying "but it says here".
I missed that one, but heard the sequel with the chair of the community board and a resident (8.15 ish). Sean's line was (paraphrase) "it must make sense, why else would the government be doing it?"
Riiiighto.

“Just look at what happened in Napier.”
I assumed this was Keith creatively paraphrasing, or exaggerating for effect, until I checked the Q & A transcript.
Turns out, Melissa Lee really did say it. Oh dear.

More from the Aucklander (Herald's Thursday supplement):

Summary: JAFA reporter goes south, meets the hicks from the sticks who will be included in the Super City (Pokeno, Mercer etc), gets an earful. They're not happy. The tone is light but the message is clear.
The only surprise is that anybody should be surprised.

I think Shearer can have that one...
And I think Shearer would tell the racist where to go. And I think you know that, Craig. Spare us the gratuitous party point-scoring.

Here's more evidence of widespread concern about this issue, not on Planet Pundit but out where the real folks live:

Hundreds of people turning up to public meetings on local government? There's something happening here, what it is ain't exactly clear ...

Damn! They've fixed it!
OK, apologies to Stuff, you do know the difference between Magnet and Magnate after all ... (and ruin my fun).
