    DPF

It doesn't beg any of those questions, and you are far too smart to think that it does. I doubt that the Electoral Act would work in Iraq, or Section 59 in Rwanda, or the RMA in Gaza.

Nobody with an ounce of awareness would equate NZ's domestic politics with responses to human catastrophes. But you know all this and must have your fun, I suppose.

  • Hard News: Madness in Mt Albert,

Shearer should just issue a simple press release:

"After spending many years in hell holes from Somalia to Iraq, I would be happy to discuss peacekeeping options with Duncan Garner, David Farrar, John Key or anyone else. On site."

I look forward to OneNews crossing live from Mexicali as brave Kiwi stalwarts continue to purchase the pork quesadilla ...

Budget cuts. It'll be live from the Mexican Cafe, Auckland (a short walk from TVNZ).

What if this had happened a week or so ago?

"So, professor, can you describe the symptoms for us?"

"Certainly. The first sign of the illness ...

"Sorry, have to stop you there, gotta go - and now we cross LIVE to our reporter with the latest on Tony Veitch! Amber, what can you tell us?"

"... is dizziness, a loss of balance ..."

  • Random Play: Hi-ho hi-ho it's off to…,

I have waited to see if anyone would comment on Paul Holmes’ column in the Herald on Sunday last weekend.

It has certainly attracted plenty of comments in the Veitch thread.

As I said before, it is simply beyond satire. The old "I'm really talking about me-me-me while pretending to talk about something else" is an old sitcom staple. The joke, of course, is that the person speaking doesn't recognise how self-absorbed they are.

Holmes' column is not only beyond satire, it is so bad - and so predictably bad - that it is beyond outrage. Which shows how far our expectations have fallen. A newspaper columnist writing drivel is common enough. But when said columnist is the host/interviewer on what purports to be the only "serious" public affairs programme on network television, and he disdains thoughtful analysis, and nobody in a position of responsibility at any of his employers seems the slightest bit concerned, then we have surely lost the battle. It's not that Holmes' piece is outrageous - it's that we are no longer outraged .

If there are standards, he should be fired. But there aren't. So what do we do? He's laughing. We're shouting. Who won?

  • Hard News: Veitch,

How to put satirists out of a job, part 138:

Pail Holmes in the Herald on Sunday:

I will say this too. A radio breakfast guy on a Sunday night is nervous and tense, no matter how long he has been doing the job and no matter how successfully. A radio breakfast man on a Sunday night is getting ready to lose his freedom for five days.

A radio breakfast guy like Veitch, who was struggling with his breakfast job and finding it much more difficult than he had thought he would, as Veitch was at the time, is especially tense on a Sunday night. Sunday night is not a night to have a fight with a breakfast man.

I do not excuse anything in saying this. It is just the way it is.

Unbelievable. Unreal. Except ... it isn't.

  • Hard News: Veitch,

I'm assuming the Cameron Bennett interview was conducted with the permission (at the request) of the subject. Not a doorstep, hand-over-the-camera-lens job.

When even a tabloid programme like Sunday has to save you from yourself, there's something seriously wrong with your media advice.

  • Hard News: Veitch,

This is all like some horribly bleak, sub- Private Eye satire. Media celeb organises media blitz to slam media for media coverage and/or lack of same.

Veitch's wife, Zoe, in various newspapers online today:

"It has now reached a level where it is intolerable and now I am begging that both the media and the public back off.

    Oh please, please do.

  • Hard News: Veitch,

    Two thoughts:

He (or his lawyer) lost me when they wheeled out the celebrity whanau. Once upon a time you called on the parish priest or your old school teacher for a character reference. But I'm really not inclined to doff my cap to the opinions of people who happen to make a living from the telly or sport instead of plumbing or dentistry.

Second: Now that our broadcasters have conducted extensive, probing interviews with the two protagonists, is there any chance they could start doing the same thing with our politicians?
