  • Hard News: Transmogrithingy,

Howard is just plain wrong to do this to the Aboriginies. If he had quietly gone about instituting programmes to help this culture, rather than cruel posturising for political gain, I may have respected him. But how hard it is to be a humble servant politician...Hone, Dick, John.

  • Hard News: Transmogrithingy,

Hone is an angry man and always will be probably. A little scary in my book. But I agree with Neil. The central issues are ghastly here and I don't envy the Australian's in trying to deal with it all.

  • Hard News: TVNZ: The Sub's Pencil Strikes,

Good on TV One for writing the new charter, but I think many of us are drifting further away from the old 'pushTV' model. I for one like my time spent more efficiently by researching news stories that are relevant and looking at entertainment and educational matters on the Internet. I really only like TV for some of the Sky docos and live sport now.

"Of course, fundamentalism is much more attractive when (ironically enough) you've never had to live with the reality of your utopia. And then, from the other end, it's fair comment to ask just how open and tolerance can an open society be of people who want nothing less than it's utter destruction?"

Good point Craig, I like that first sentence. I would also challenge 'Christian Zealots' to give that some thought. I for one do not subscribe to the view that the 'Kingdom of God' that Jesus spoke of should be militarily brought about. The sort of utopia that may result in may not be too far from Talibanistan.

BTW how do you insert a comment, as with Richard aboev, in grey nd not C&P like I have?

  • Hard News: Don't Panic,

I disagree with the analogy between the bombing of innocent people in Afghanistan with the failed bombings to kill innocent people in London. On 9/11 people deliberately planned and executed a successful killing spree from Afghanistan and had the infrastructure there to continue. I don't know any sensible person who would not try and defend themsleves against that. Twice now, that I know of, have Forces in Afghanistan killed innocent people by mistake. I feel for those families and the bitterness they now deal with. War isn't nice but these Forces aren't Terrorists. If your nieghbours are hurling rocks at your house, do you just stand and watch? Should we have watched Hitler slaughter more people because we were afraid of making mistakes in defending against him?

In saying all that, let's continue to look for more positive solutions though!

"I have considerable faith in modernism. We've won so far; we'll win again."

Yes, but haven't these 'Terrorists' (I don't particularly like the term) been living in Britain for their whole lives...where's the positive influence of modernism if all they want to do is destroy it?

  • Hard News: Not such as to engender confidence,

I agree, a witch hunt for pedophiles and abusers is not the answer. It will cause great fear. Sure, do justice when it's found necessary, but going after injustice in the form Howard is proposing is creating another injustice. (However, I can't see the links to the Iraq war in this argument, Neil).

I do think that the Aboriginal community and many in this blog may need to stop seeing this community as 'victims' supreme. Perhaps they do need the encouragement of their proud past or an appeal to their inherent goodness. Some might say too many are too far gone. No one's ever to far gone for a bit of courage to spark their hearts and start taking back their lives.

  • Hard News: Here and There,

Yeah, squatting's the answer...just ask Jerry Collins. I think the AB's showed a supreme mental toughness against the Boks. With Burger and Skinstad showing all that is bad in Bok rugby and the gladiatorial one-eyed crowd I admire their fortitude. I hope they absolutely cream this 3rd rate side the Boks are sending down here and embarrass SA rugby. By the way...those she-pee bums are a bit dodgy.
