  • Up Front: A Word From the Ministry for…,

I don't knowmuch about marking English exams but...
could it be pure self-interest on the part of the markers?
In that Shakespeare, Lord of the Flies etc have been written about a zillion times and they know it inside out, appropriate quotes and all so it's way easier to mark? I imagine that if you haven't seen a movie/read a book and only marking an essay on it for the first time (or even the first 100 times) it would take a heck of a lot longer.

  • Southerly: Life at Paremoremo Boys' High,

    WOW Dyan
I think you just changed my mind about uniforms...
    kind of!

the free-for-all you have described worked largely due to the community/society within which it existed... totally foreign to how it is here... or what i see and experience anyway.

as a parent i love school uniforms
my children are at a primary school this year where the uniform is voluntary (but only 10% wear it, not my kids)

the school they went to last year had a compulsary uniform (Catholic) and life was so much easier! Yes uniforms are pricey - but compared to having to buy lots of clothes like I do now it was way cheaper. Also the 2 daughters spend a lot longer getting ready in the morning than they used to. (They now need to think about what to wear)

  • Speaker: Memory Food,

I am very interested in hearing about baking the bread and the recipe
will there be a follow-up post?

    Grandmother range -
my maternal grandmother moved to Hawkes Bay when she was 3 (just in time for the big shake of '31 of which she remembers a lot of) from Taumaranui. I don't think she has often left the Bay since then - certainly never the North Island.
my paternal gran retired with my pop when my dad (who was the youngest) was only 17. They sold the orchard and travelled around some Pacific Islands and Canada. Eventually built a house in Whangamata (before it was trendy to) and settled down to a life of socialising, golf and bowls.

  • Hard News: Things To Do,

    Also - fruit in schools.

I have seen recently (before school hols) both students and teachers bringing large bags of apples to school to share with other students and teachers.
If you have a surplus of fresh produce it is customary to share with others you know - it has always been like this in my family and with many people i know.

  • Hard News: Things To Do,

With regards to the idea of having a income tax-free threshold (of $5k or whatever) - apart from the obvious negative of less tax income for govt - are there any arguments against this idea?

It seems to be the easiest and most effective way of putting more money into the hands of those who need it... and avoids any of the concerns that others have raised about food stamps and WFF etc

  • OnPoint: Dear Peter Brown: *Hug*,

above high school was a very middle-class 'white' neighbourhood.

just thinking that maybe comments about racism dying out (with new generations being more tolerant, integrated etc) might be true in the big metropolis of Auckland but not in the provinces where you often hear comments from teenagers and think 'that came straight out of their parents mouth'

  • OnPoint: Dear Peter Brown: *Hug*,

I informally interviewed some international students at a NZ high school late last year.

I asked them what they would tell other (kiwi) students if they could.
They said they would tell them "Just because we 'look' Asian does not mean we are all Chinese" and "just because we are 'Asian' student does not mean we are brainy!" they were quite anxious that the 'kiwi' students thought they were 'geeks' or 'swots' who had no interest in a social life or joining sports teams (for example).
The Brazilian and German students did not have these same issues

  • 08 Internet NZ: Where now?,

For me, probably more PAS. Poneke too.
I enjoy not feeling like I'm going to war when expressing an opinion.
I imagine that on other 'political' blogs I will do more 'lurking' than engaging. I have found that, generally, others aren't really that interested in discussing policy - they're just there to fling shite, abuse, intimidate, bully, insinuate. A lot are not interested in learning from others or have any interest in others opinions and ideas. They appear to be very narrow-minded.
I find PAS to be the opposite of this. People seem grown-up enough to participate in meaningful vigorous debate, be open to learning from others and genuinely interested in new (to them, anyway) ideas.
Well, they do say you can judge a person by the company they keep...
