Serious question: Does Nina Simone get much air time on ConcertFM?

Well I’m one who happens to think the pinnacle of high culture on the radio is test cricket. Important too.

We used to have that commercial free in this country. Shared with the predecessor to ConcertFM as it happens.

It is now on commercial radio wedged in between ads for impotence pills and water tanks. Obviously that’s not ideal for me, but I never thought of it as some birthright.

    @Danielle,

I realised Tainted Love was a cover; that's why I used it as an example.

Makes it a bit like most of what gets played on ConcertFM.

Pro: Being a taxpayer and helping to fund a radio station is the only way I can make sure that anyone who wants to can listen to music that's not just important but otherwise nigh unobtainable in that form

You don't think comments like that harden the perception that there's an element of elitism and misguided sense of entitlement about the whole ConcertFM backers?

Tainted Love was probably important in its own way.

And, like others have commented, I’m finding this thread fascinating

I bet more people say they listen to Concert FM in surveys than actually listen to Concert FM.

Because this wee country only has one city with enough accommodation and so on to host a crowd the size the IRB expects - and the other stadiums while nice are too small. For the IRB.

Correct. Except I don’t get the (perceived) jibe at the IRB.

As part of the bidding process NZRU had to guarantee at least one stadium with a capacity of >60k. They then signed a contract. So I struggle to see how the IRB can be seen as being unreasonable here.

A bit like how they weren’t being unreasonable in 2002 either.

Matthew; your link is for a handball tournament. I’m talking football.

I’m not saying the RWC audience isn’t big (although not such a favourable time-zone in 2011), I just think the 3rd Biggest in the World line gets thrown around a bit casually.

It stuns a lot of people that the RWC is the third-most watched sporting event in the world, after FIFA WC and the summer Olympics.

Are there any published figures that actually back that up?

I’ll be staggered if the UEFA Euro Champs aren’t bigger than the RWC.

(Exception: that whining prick Stephen Jones.)

Who, incidentally, was a perfect gentlemen out on the town here in 2005 even when dealing with a lot of banter (not all of it good natured) from the locals.

He must become that other person when he gets back to hotel room at night.

Kyle, Dunedin’s best (only?) hope is that if the IRB changes the World Circuit from being Dec – May to a May – Oct event. And with it becoming more of a summer sport, and the Olympics on the horizon (and likely increased European / Nth America interest as a result) that’s more than a distant possibility.

Then an indoor stadium becomes very attractive.
