  • Cracker: two-oh-one-oh,

    CHRIS TREMAIN, NATIONAL

You should ask him to get his brother and mates along just to liven it up a little

  • I feel Ayn Rand,

When soccer player David Beckham was rumored to have been in sexual trouble, it may have been disappointing to his fans, but it was hardly surprising. Beckham just had the look of someone who was born to screw around

    1. Beckham came clean very early when his story broke.
    2. His minders were also very quick to run a smear campaign against Loos. Although, that's a bit easier to do when there's only one person to smear.

  • I feel Ayn Rand,

One of the ironies about the whole Tiger Woods story is that for a guy who had his image so carefully and successfully built should have handled the aftermath just so badly.

And 2 years off golf now? Hard to see what the point of that is.

And he's back; starting in January.

Always suspicious of announcements like this made on 23rd December.

  • Field Theory: One in a billion,

I think you’re all focussing too much on the elite level. No professional coach would give a flying toss about sexual orientation.

It’s what happens to the 16 / 17 year-old that weights the stats at the elite level. That’s the age where the prejudice is probably at its worst, and any gay athletes at that age have got enough to be thinking about to put up with that kind of shit. Note it’s not just guys who give up sport at that age.

And by the time they feel more comfortable with things, and the prejudice isn’t as acute it’s probably too late for a professional career. But not too late to take up officiating.

I know, that’s broad strokes, but that’s my take.

  • Field Theory: One in a billion,

I’d totally forgotten the reffing angle.

Not sure if it’s the same person, but arguably NZ’s best ref is gay, and pretty open about it. From what I understand the players couldn’t give a toss because he’s good at what he does.

So it’s probably easier to be a gay official than a player at the top level? Cricket umpiring is a classic example too. My theory for that would be that you can pick it up post Secondary school when you’re a bit more sure about things.

  • Field Theory: One in a billion,

As you observe, top class rugby is perhaps not the most accepting environment for a young gay man

Social rugby would be even less accepting.

  • Field Theory: The NPC Manifesto,

    Vettori as head of NZRU...

Good player, who through over-diversification of duties over time has lost touch with his core competency.

    Perfect fit.

  • Hard News: It is your right and duty to vote,

Perhaps, at this time of evaluating which Maori flag Maoris really want, we could turn our attention to the other flag flying on the Harbour Bridge on 6th Feb.

Because I’d be surprised if you got anything close to an 80% approval rating there.

  • Field Theory: The NPC Manifesto,

Tew made the right decision at the start of the year, and then got all cute and put a nonsensical format around applying it. Even 10 in the 1st Div is probably a bit on the high side; South Africa has 8.

But right from the start he wanted to ensure it was Northland, CM, Manawatu and Tasman (not a proper union) to go down.

And above all, he wanted the 5 SHuuper Bases to remain.

If he had applied the criteria applied in all other competitions; bottom teams on that table getting relegated, he’d have got away with it, and good would have been achieved. But instead some litigious lawyers from Blenheim, Feilding and Dargaville have scared then into paralysis.

Rugby in NZ is the ultimate camel.
