  • Cracker: Go Figure,

We should take our time over it, and not rush around because the Herald wants a sales boost.

Fair enough, but there's a difference between taking your time and wasting time, doing nothing. Talking about changing the flag every year or two, only to abandon the conversation, then start it up again from scratch a year or two later counts as the latter as far as I can see.

And as far as this goes:

the current New Zealand flag is, although a bit boring, competent and dignified

I find it very boring, messy and indstinct and I quite like the look of some of alternatives I've seen (no idea whether they originated from advertisers or elsewhere). YMMV.

  • Cracker: Go Figure,

But we really need a few more important issues addressed first.

Ah, the catch-all excuse for never getting anything done ever...

How many times has this "debate" come up, then petered out or dissolved into "yeah, it should change to... something... at some point..."

Most people seem to agree the flag should change eventually, can we not just get it fucking over with? If it's the Herald who acts as the catalyst, good on them. Sure, if it really happened, we'd have to cope with them crowing about it for months on end, but at least that'd be the end of it.

  • Cracker: Bare Breasts Key for Important…,

I'm too busy to hunt down and link to the Onion article about how, one year on, the nation's children remain traumatised by the sight of Janet Jackson's breast during the Super Bowl half time show - let's just assume that I did and it was hilarious.

  • Busytown: Holiday reading lust,

Warren Ellis linked to me once in April of 2007 - no Internet washing for me after that. Which I guess explains why so much of the Internet I see is filthy. There can't be any other reason.

  • Radiation: Big bang theory,

We're just into the second season, and while I enjoy it a great deal, it definitely suffers from a few characterisation issues - notably Leonard's inconsistent people skills (+20 whenever the episode demans he play straight man to Sheldon, -20 whenever it doesn't)

I have the same problem with Bones - Temperance always seems to be as socially skilled as the script requires her to be at that particular moment. Also not sure about how TV shows seem to be treating Aspergers as the new "quirky".

  • Hard News: Holiday Musings,

Sure, but I said "if you don't like computer games". I didn't say "if you do like computer games then you'll love Avatar".

Sure, but before that you said that your reasons for liking Avatar were the same as your reasons for liking computer action games. Keep your Modus Ponens in your pants - we're talking 'splosions here!

  • Hard News: Holiday Musings,

Admittedly, most of my rationale for the "Na'vi bio-USB ports = their junk" bit came from a Cracked.com article a week or two ago that made a lot of mileage from that joke.

Why would I like Avatar? Why would I like a really good computer action game? Same answer. If you don't like them, it's probably for the same reason you wouldn't like Avatar.

But I do like really good computer action games, and I didn't much like Avatar. I'm pretty sure we're just in YMMV territory.

I have, for instance, watched films that I knew, even as I was watching them, were absolute cack, and yet enjoyed every second ( Torque springs to mind). Avatar left me cold emotionally - all of the picking at plot holes and unoriginality is, I guess, just a post-hoc rationalisation of my emotional response. Ditto for those praising it, I would assume.

  • Hard News: Holiday Musings,

I'm feeling squicked out at the idea that the Na'vi use the same Frech braid for bonding with space horses and hot, sparkly only-on-the-Special-Edition-DVD hair-sex.

And by "bonding with", you mean "wrestling to the ground and forcing yourself upon" -- eww-some barely begins to cover it. And then they start doing it with trees.

  • Hard News: Holiday Musings,

Yeah, Avatar had no emotional impact on me at all. I was mightily impressed with the technical side of it, but everything else left me cold.

I refer everyone to John Rogers' best post ever on Kung Fu Monkey, the moral of which is "Don't write action scenes. Write suspense scenes that require action to resolve."

I felt no suspense at all in the big action scenes in Avatar - Michael Bay could have done them just as well.

  • Hard News: Feminist as crazy old man,

I mostly just called him 'the parasite' for several months (much to my mother's horror).

Yeah, my wife was never that keen on me referring to her as the "vessel for my seed"...

Big baby, small baby makes no difference - it's the position that counts.

True - I would also recommend plenty of time on hands and knees, rocking the wee dear into the right place. That was our midwife's instructions to my wife, and the little guy ended up the right way around without need for manual positioning.
