I think that this from Andy needs repeating:
They have spent 9 months preaching austerity and the need for kiwis to expect a lower standard of living, all the while maximising to the full the expenses thay can rort of the taxpayer. English can argue to he's blue in the face that altering his trust arrangements was not driven by money but I don't believe him.
as it may have got lost in the Craig/Joe sideshow.
It seems that English has been preaching belt-tightening for everyone but himself.

@Jack - couldn't agree more with what you said about the Wiggles and Hi-5. I didn't know about the re-design of Dora, but it was a favourite of my daughter.

Is there any hard information that there are Cruise Ship visits associated with the brief window of the Rugby World Cup?

Karen - I don't know if that is still the case or not, but either way it doesn't help the passengers joining the cruise in Auckland.

I suspect most cruise liners would want to stop in Auckland so that passengers can transfer through the airport.
Correct - there is a huge change-over of passengers when the ships are in Auckland, evidenced by the hotel bookings over those days and the number of tourists wheeling their suitcases up and down Albert St.
So, imho, better facilities are needed. There are occasions when there is more than one ship in town at a time, but only one can berth at Princes Wharf. You end up with queues of passengers along side the cargo sheds waiting to clear Customs/Immigration and embark. Not a great look, or start to the voyage.

Russell - You're an optimist! I think that time is a huge factor as well. By the time we've worked out who is paying for it all, there won't be time to build an edifice (prior to RWC anyway).

While I am in favour of the opening up of the waterfront, I'm confused as to why the City Council should be involved with providing the Cruise Ship terminal (or have I got that wrong?).
Auckland definitely needs some better facilities for the cruise ships, but shouldn't the Port Authority be providing those? AIA provide the infrastructure at the airport, in return for landing fees from the airlines, and I would assume that the Port collects revenue from the cruise ship companies when their ships berth at the port.
There is also the obvious conflict (which I think was mentioned on another thread) between providing an open public space, but also a facility which has to be locked down for customs and immigration purposes when a ship is berthed there.
