I agree, Chuck's been pulling all shades of shit out of his ass, almost as if his brain gets reformatted after every post.

Heh. Sometimes, mark, sometimes, you're so spot on....

But yeah, Chuck shifts the goal posts every time he gets cornered.

my only misgiving was the 'please leave' motif,

That would usually bring agreement from me, but as Sacha said, Chuck was the one that went with the "I won't post here anymore" tantrum.

Joe, surely Mark is saying "Disagree with Chuck, but be polite about it"?

I don't know about that, Ben. Sacha asked Chuck a reasonable question, and Chuck's reply was to brush Sacha off as a "flack" who was not worth responding to. While I don't think deliberate impoliteness helps any debate, I see no reason why anyone should feel any need to be careful about being polite to Chuck.

Wait, Revolutionary Road isn't one of the movies nominated for Best Pic - I'm saved!

Benjamin Button is worth going to, if only for the ramming-the-submarine sequence.

The movie is okay (kind of intriguing) up to that point. Then the sea battle part itself is good, as you say. Then there's the silly hummingbird bit - and it's all down hill from there.

    Danielle,

I agree with your husband's assessment of RR. I might go to see it, just because that's my tradition (well, as of last year) - to go all the Best Pic nominated movies. But based on the trailer, that film looks soul destroying.

    Matthew,

Amy Tauben (I think it was) said of Seven, that it wasn't a great film, but it was great filmmaking. I agree with her assessment of the film and Fincher's ability. Fight Club was much better - a flawed classic. Oddly, I feel somehow the flaws make the film better somehow, as if they mirror the imperfections of the protagonist, maybe.

Zodiac is his best film. I was very impressed by it on first viewing, but I've only seen it the once and need to watch it again to solidify my opinion.

Button was a disappointment, but Fincher's lesser films are mostly flawed at a script level. His problem seems to be his choice of projects.

"It's saying it isn't okay to brush off domestic violence as something that only happens in some "other" part of society."

Steve, that is exactly what you and Russell have been trying to do.

Show me the instance where I said it was okay to dismiss domestic violence if it took place in another part of society.

What I'm saying to you is: If you watch the ad with an open mind, you'll see that it is not about demonising men as Ralston and you have portrayed. It has maybe two lines aimed specifically at men; it has stats about violence against men; it is mostly gender neutral. The message is: It's not okay - Ever.

By the standards of a television campaign, it's remarkably even handed and non-preachy. If you and Ralston could watch it without your ideological filters on, you'd see that.

“It's not ok to say it only happens in certain parts of society
So be careful what you say”

Mark, are you trying say that domestic violence happens at the same rate in higher socio economic homes...>\

No. He's quoting the ad, and the ad isn't saying anything about the rate of domestic violence in that part anyway. It's saying it isn't okay to brush off domestic violence as something that only happens in some "other" part of society.

Anyway, I thought you said you weren't responding here anymore?

Oh yeah, and Clemence Poesy is gorgeous, alright.

    Matthew,

It's wonderful, and surprisingly Pinter-esque too, in the best sense of the word, as well, as in parts, being oddly moving in its depction of the father-son dynamic of the two leads. Of course, it's also filthy and un-PC as all get out, and Bruges the village looks as gorgeous as Clemence Poesy. And the ending makes a lot of cosmic (and karmic) sense.

Yeah, it was excellent. Highly recommended to anyone here who hasn’t seen it yet. You’re right, too, that McDonough’s an excellent writer who can direct competently, but not actually an especially gifted director.

I wouldn't be surprised if Slumdog Millionare takes out the top award, and it's a film I've been wanting to see for some time, not least because I'm a fan of Danny Boyle: patchy as his post-Trainspotting filmography, he's proved himself an eclectic and talented genre filmmaker, seeming as comfortable in zombie horror pics (the superb 28 Days Later which counts as the decade's most imanaginitive evocation of London outside of Children of Menand Eastern Promises and "hard" sci-fi (Sunrise). The Beach and A Life Less Ordinary were dogs, though.

Agreed on Boyle - interesting director. I’m wary of Slumdog Millionaire for some reason, but I will check it out.

I’ll bet you a Monteiths that (unfortunately) Benjamin Button takes out the Oscar for Best Pic.

    Reason to be cheerful:

I'm off to In Bruges, which I'm really looking forward to. I've heard plenty of good stuff about it.

Incidently, it was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay.

The noms for Best Picture look pretty underwhelming. I've only seen The Curious Case of Benjamin Button so far, and that was pretty meh. And no The Dark Knight for Best Picture! (Although it got a nod for Ledger, and for several tecnical areas.) I'd bet that it's better than at least two or three of those nominated. Will see.

But I want to end today's posting on positive note, so...umm, again -

    have one on me!
