  • OnPoint: Bandwagon Hobos,

Sure - I'm not wedded to dairy at all. But I'm just saying, growing cash crops where we have a competitive advantage, and using that to trade for other kinds of food is much more reasonable than trying to grow everything (bananas, for example) ourselves.

i've always thought that people understand the model, i.e. we trade high so we can buy flash stuff, but there's this (semi-)understandable cultural whinge that does "but that trading high shouldn't apply to hard-working kiwis whose butter is a birthright".

  • OnPoint: Bandwagon Hobos,

I happen to strongly disagree with you, and that in many cases dairy is an highly inefficient use of some of the best growing conditions on the planet.

    and, what george said.

  • OnPoint: Bandwagon Hobos,

the Greens are righ tto ask what we get out of the dairy industry. They polute our atmosphere, poison our rivers, dodge their taxes, and we don't even get cheap cheese.

i agree. the taxpayer will be covering their externalities for decades.

look at the rotorua lakes if you need proof of that. and once the company is well-enough cashed up, it will leave for fairer shores.

is kupe street the same one that was burned to the ground before the 5[summin'] royal visit?

you know, to stop the queen having to see "the maoris" living in squalor?

The Herald appear to have been stung by this criticism and have added some research-like components to their story

and stung they should be. both government and opposition are doing their jobs. the herald on the other hand is just leaving itself open to accusations of being a mouthpiece.

the day the fourth estate starts regurgitating media releases uncritically in order to sell copy is the day i switch them off.

    oh. wait. i already did.

    Now you're getting waspish, Craig.

    true.

i'll admit to failing to see how that moveable feast of an argument relates back to the issue of the herald not doing its research...

I'm beginning to wonder if one of the reasons this kind of story "has legs" in NZ is a sustained sense of grievance among much of the population,

i'm inclined to think that's exactly it. luxurience is something a great number of new zealanders seem to think they're entitled to.

hence the purchase of massive houses they can't afford to meet the costs of. they're "entitled to live in a house like this" seems to quickly shift into, "it's the gubbermint/'maoris'/asians keeping me down" when they can't afford the repayments.

dot actually links to an interesting post.

i'm thinking that some agencies might not be realising that it is election year...

D'you reckon, what with the Bailey Kurariki beat-up, that "luxury" is this year's word?

we've been using "luxurient" around here for a while.

as in, "my tax cuts will finally give me that luxurient lifestyle i've been dreaming of".
