  • Hard News: Every option has costs, every…, in reply to Peter Davis,

    (1) What has really changed on the migration stats? The key thing is people (rightly) mention "net migration". We are not necessarily getting a whole lot more people flooding in. The big change is that fewer NZers are leaving and many more are returning. So, the net figures are up. The target is therefore not necessarily those coming in (e.g. "foreigners"), but rather the fewer who are leaving (or returning).

That's not really what the Herald figures on permanent long-term arrivals and departures show. For all countries, arrivals from NZ citizens have risen slightly in the past few years, while long-term arrivals from non-NZ citizens are trending up sharply. NZ citizen departures are down significantly though.

Mmmm yeah I’d like to see the real numbers on this, I suspect that a lot of the export earnings in this area come at diploma level, not degree.

Fair call. You may well be right.

In addition because our major export is dairy

    Hold the phone:

New Zealand's tourism boom has propelled the industry past dairy as the top export earner as the number of visitors increased by one million in the past six years.

For the year ending December last year total exports of dairy and related products were $12.05 billion, accounting for 17.2 per cent of all exports. Over the same period, tourism (including air travel) was worth $12.17b or 17.4 per cent of exports, according to analysis by the ASB.

These compare to 18.2 per cent and 16.9 per cent respectively for 2015,

  • Hard News: Friday Music: The Inside Track, in reply to Hugh Wilson,

Last time around I posted the Blerta cover (there is at least one tune on that which could be played out), and this time I was curious if anyone included Headband (for the drum heavy ‘laws must change’) or Quincy Conserve (for ‘ride the rain’, ‘somebody stole my thunder’ or their cover of ‘I feel good’) ?!

No, but there's a Prince Tui Teka album that's reckoned to have some great funky jams on it.

I noticed there were lots of generic black sleeves in your landscape photo, but your post has clarified the exhibition is about records not just covers & I think its probably the case that various dancefloor friendly numbers were pressed on tight budgets which didn't extend to artwork ..

Yeah, in that sense it's not as good as the first one – although the "older" end, to the left of the photo, is better.

It's a much shallower pool of records and there are quite a few DJs putting up their own records, many of them white labels, which aren't so interesting to look at. That said, DJ Substance's test-pressing of Home Brew's Last Week (which he helped record) is pretty cool.

Nice piece of Tory Party propaganda Andrew, a long way from the truth that I hear from the UK. Just read one article that reports Tories lead dropped 8% in a week.

They'll have been cheered by that. But other polls are considerably less happy. And they all have Corbyn's approval rating well short of his party's support. His approval is the lowest of any of the four main party leaders.

“Fuck off and join the SWP”

To be fair, that's where quite a few of the new members came from in the first place.

I guess the membership got sick of being used and voted for someone who espoused their values.

I dunno: I know of some longtime UK Labour members who are utterly distraught at what's happened.

There's also the fact of 26,000 members bailing since mid-last year, 7000 in the month after Corbyn's Brexit whip alone.

And this is after Momentum altered its constitution in January to force its members to join Labour.

Maybe Steve might put the Gorgonzola tape (SQ002) up for listening as well

And that was recorded at Rosslyn.

These guys were well ahead of the curve - a complete works is called for IMHO.

    I reckon.

Jonathan Demme died this week. Alongside his feature films, he also made this video for New Order's 'The Perfect Kiss':
