I'm reminded of a discussion on Not PC in the wake of post-Virginia Tech where commenters were disputing whether his assessment that the problem was "a failure to recognise evil" was accurate or helpful.
http://pc.blogspot.com/2007/04/virginaia-tech-string-of-failures-and.html
http://pc.blogspot.com/2007/04/does-evil-exist.htmlObjectivism aside, one problem I had with that approach was the only question individuals of society then has to ask is whether they could have taken down the perp sooner. I think it shows a depressing lack of imagination to be certain one is incapable of anything.
It also gets in the way of coming up with fixes for the causes. Also if the evildoers end up thinking of themselves as evil it psychologically is not the way to redemption. Not that I said any of this at the time.

Write (& perhaps perform) NZ's new national anthem?
A while ago I blogged this:
I remember one of the TV arts programmes of the past commissioned some NZ musos to do better. Turns out it's quite tricky. Gareth Farr produced something more song than anthem, and quite a complicated song at that. This clearly failed the programme's "can be sung by a rugby crowd" test. Chris Knox, another contestant and noted anarchist type, went to the heart of what he considered the purpose of a national anthem. It went: "New Zea-land is a veryveryveryveryveryveryvery nice country". Possibly Colin Powell is a fan.

Say, what is 'Pacifics Triple Star' anyway?
If I could only think of someone famous who sings, dances and acts, I could provide some witticism about pacific's triple threat.

At least it's not a terrifyingly nationalistic anthem. Other countries expound on their plans to overrun the world. We seem content that a greater power should intervene to stop us being overrun.

looks RB's identified a means by which to get (approx) half the population to opt out.
If that doesn't work he could always run TV ads for PA based around girls in bikinis.

Bokononism for state religion!
Or we could have pastafarianism, just so all those religious people who insist atheism is a religion can be right.

It's a tragic fact that for me those letters will forever stand for "Otago Daily Times"

While I admit I have yet to migrate my work to Ubuntu, I didn't find it much different to windows to use. This is someone who speaks Mac and PC talking of course.
You're ever gonna have to write a line of code if you don't wanna, as far as I could see.

Harking back to Craig earlier, I have to much of my problem with people wanting to declare "state religions" is the way it goes with an attitude that uses terms like "religious treason".

There is guerilla video footage of Paul Reynolds' speech in the Scoop Awards Coverage. Scroll down, if you see a fetching photo of my jugular, you've gone too far.
And congratulations of course, well deserved.
I recall there's a quote somewhere of Eugene Ionesco, sounding pained about having somehow become part of the establishment. And he wrote a play about people turning into rhinoceroses, so it's not as if you'd be in bad company.
