I'm starting to get really, really teary-eyed about how symbolically awesome this is
Oh, me too! I feel like a housewife in the 1960s!

This whole "red = right, blue = left" thing is doing my head in.

CNN.com reports "If Obama wins, the bull gets slaughtered". Some Kenyan villagers will kill a bull to feast upon if their lad wins. Oh noez! Vote McCain! Save the bull!

BTW, anyone have any idea when we will get a sense on how California's Proposition 8 is breaking?
I'm really interested in Prop 8 too. One of my LiveJournal friends is a gay man living in LA who recently married his long-time boyfriend. He and his friends have been out in effect holding "NO ON 8" signs, and there's been talk of the Mormon church bussing in voters to support the proposition.
In a way, this makes me glad that referendums in New Zealand can't actually change any laws.

In 1985, my standard 4 class's end-of-year fun-day barbecue was held at the Vela's house in Tamahere (not too far from the site where the fiery coldstore inferno would happen 23 years later).
From memory, we weren't allowed inside the house, but we had the splendid surroundings of the kidney-shaped pool, poolhouse and spa to play with.
And when you're 10, that's all you need, really.

but the jokes were funny even if you didn't know what "Jewish" was
I imagine someone watching, laughing, and remarking, "Heh, I don't know what a "Jew" is, but they sure are funny!"
Re Ting Ting on Little Britain. That was my 'jump the shark' moment. The first time I saw it I sighed a little bit and didn't laugh. It wasn't funny; it was just a lame racial stereotype that seemed to have been brought back from a death in the 1970s. (Comedy zombie?)

Best W3 clip ever!
Incredible comedy from this extract. I feel huge empathy for the little girl - it surely could have easily been me doing that.

__What I did however find most disturbing was the quiz show was called "W3" and now I'm finding myself haunted by the mental image of his smiling face, whenever I see a URL beginning "www". Though this says more about me than Dr Smith.__
Wasn't W3 Selwyn Toogood? And It's Academic Lockwood Smith?
Yep, that's right. W3 should always be associating with dear Selwayn, benevolent grampy of the nation. Perhaps Jon is just looking for an excuse to link everyday web addresses with the grinning face of Lockwood Smith.
What I always found creepy was that the kids on It's Academic called their genial host "sir". "Packet three, please, sir."

And … the Guardian has a story about Tourism New Zealand's new weapon in the war for the British tourist dollar: Ladyhawke.
A bit of a controversial move there by Tourism NZ in acknowledging that New Zealand does in fact have cities and urban life.
Though it does start with Pip saying "People always think it's like Lord of the Rings", which is oddly accompanied by the classic, humanless empty New Zealand landscape shots - surely the opposite of what she's trying to talk about.
But it's a good start. Maybe with the water tested with promoting Wellington, we might eventually see acknowledgement that downtown Auckland exists.

The Newsmash needs a warning that it contains Russell singing the opening line of The Greatest Love of All. HALP!
