  • Hard News: What you lookin' at?,

We've just ditched Sky. Couldn't justify the expense and we were hardly watching anything in the platform apart from the occasional drama on Soho: Girls, The Affair, Homeland and Game of Thrones have all been appointment viewing. However there are other ways to watch landmark drama, and Sky is ridiculously overpriced.

We don't watch any free to air TV. I can't bear the commercial environment the programmes sit in, and there's not much for me in the schedules. I guess at 50, I'm pretty much outside most of the target demographics. Ironic as I make TV drama for a living.

Most of our viewing these days is on Netflix and from iTunes - both via Apple TV. Loved The Kiling, and most recently Narcos. This type of viewing feels like the future of home media consumption. Sadly the subscription model will never provide a big enough mainstream audience in NZ to fund quality drama production.

  • Hard News: Bowie, in reply to Danielle,

I completely agree. Haven't felt this shocked and sad about the death of a musician since John Lennon died in 1980.

  • Hard News: Bowie,

    Words are inadequate.

A couple of tiny memories: working out the lyrics to Life on Mars by stop-starting my cassette player and writing down the words phrase by phrase; and going into a hairdresser's with a black and white photo of immaculately blow-waved Bowie, and demanding to be made to look like this. Both these memories would have been from 1979.

When Jamie XX played Let's Dance last night through that stonking sound system it was one of the most moving and exhilarating moments I have known.

'Review' as a synonym for 'cancel' or 'make redundant' or 'succumb to political pressure'.

'Beltway' - no idea what it means in NZ, but hearing it used quite a lot by politicians and journalists.

'Consent' - a word that has been the subject of much discussion this year in various contexts, but a quality which still seems to be painfully lacking in too many circles.

As a straight white middle-aged middle-class man, I recognise the serious lack of women directors in the NZ TV industry and support all attempts to rectify this.

The use of 'Centre Right' is interesting. In today's newspeak this tends to mean rabidly neoliberal.

I've had the same experience as your son. Apple Music is working seamlessly for me across Mac, iPhone and iPad. I do have an iTunes Match subscription.

I'm really enjoying the 'For You' section with it's curated playlists and music selections. I like the service so much that I have unsubscribed from Spotify and TIDAL.

Now Apple just need to offer the option of higher resolution streaming, and I'll be very happy.
