BenWilson, in reply to
In amongst all McCully's finger-pointing, Dave Dobbyn must be relieved he hasn't been blamed for the breakdown of the waterfront event... ;- )
Well, considering I was part of the sudden press to get to the other side of the big screen that was working, and I only did it to see Dobbyn, it can't be long. But blame me? Hell no. I'm apparently an unwitting victim of organizational incompetence, and the only dispute is who the buck stops with. Council, Cup organizers, Government, international capitalism, the patriarchy?
I'm quite surprised to hear of incidents towards the Maori procession, although they were certainly crowded. Also surprised to hear about drunks and cigarette butts, since I saw a grand total of one smoker, and didn't see any alcoholic drinks on display at all. The waka were moored in the Viaduct, so perhaps people from the bars got to them, in which case bar security were extremely remiss in allowing them to leave with drinks in hand. In fact, studying my own photos of the viaduct, all of the waka are at least 15 feet away from the crowd, so how they came to get cigarette butts in them is beyond me, unless the crowd were unleashed onto the actual landings at some point, which I find extremely unlikely. Beer bottles would have to have been thrown in from a distance. There are no independent reports of any unruliness like this, so it sounds a lot like exaggeration to me. Considering there were upwards of 100,000 cameras in the area at the time, I'll start believing it when I see some of it.
