    What, no twatcock?

Well, from the article, twitflocker sounds like a related term.

  • Hard News: Wikileaks: The Cable Guys,

Cryptome is the I.B.M. to Wikileaks' Apple. Which is to say, among the parallels, that anyone who knows anything professionally about computer security has heard of Cryptome, but leisure users of computers are more familiar with Wikileaks.

  • Hard News: Going Social,

I'm not on Facebook. Except for photos that I am in that may have been tagged, and posts made by those around me that feature my actions, and the pieces of content I've created over the years that others have displayed and created back to me. So Facebook will have a fairly tight advertising profile of me without me taking part, it is just they have no way of delivering ads to me. This may change if they successfully implement their 'use Facebook for all your communications to everyone' idea.
Putting aside Facebook's specific ethical breaches, you would face the same kind of potential problems with any pervasive, centralised, social networking site.
Twitter I will search, without being a tweeter or tweetee, for it's immediacy. After we felt the earthquake that turned out to be in Christchurch, twitter was one of the sources I turned to to quickly find out what unfiltered news I could.

can you provide a pronunciation guide please?

Twa pronounced similar to Two, but with the a sound from tall
tc is the plosive penultimate sound from hitch
ock is pronounced like Jacques, but with the unused o from the earlier Two.

I can also advise on how to pronounce Icelandic volcanoes, if your insurance is up to date.

  • Hard News: Where nature may win, in reply to James George,

“In hundreds of years of methane explosions in coal mines, why is it that if the coal earns billions, there is such reluctance to develop technology to prevent recurrences?”

WTF. Anyone with a tiniest shred of knowledge of the history of mining should have heard of the Safety Lamp.

  • Hard News: I'm not a "f***ing cyclist".…,

Does anyone have country comparative km cycled per person, or a similar figure. I haven't been able to track it down, and I would find a a useful comparison to the figures of cyclist deaths per population I was able to find in a U.K. gov pdf

not only do I have no preference, I can detect no difference...

If you have your browser set to disable javascript, typekit would have no effect, and on a Mac (even when javascript is on) if you disable Typekit, the default fonts are very similar looking.

I (with my pretty miserable network connection at home) am just glad things seem usable without javascript.

(though without javascript, the preview button is a post one)
