  • Radiation: This Is Not My Dan Carter,

Misfits on Monday on C4 is interesting and entertaining. A similar tone to Outrageous Fortune--the extremes of the underclass (but you wouldn't want them living next door!)

  • Hard News: Just pretend it's Friday already,

I was sent a wonderful p**take clip about Newport, South Wales (based on JayZ's New York) but I can't seem to shift it here.

Has anyone heard the latest release from Arcade Fire yet?

I feel like it is Friday as I am on to the concluding paragraph of a 7,500 word chapter for a Te Papa Press book on NZ film history ( I am doing the Peter Jackson era). I was late ring-in for a writer who dropped out and have had one month to write it (the other contributers had months).

  • Hard News: iPad Impressions,

Well put, Giovanni. Maintaining a consistently ethical approach is so damn difficult. For instance, I really like the idea of the Buy Nothing Day (which usually comes by every November) but it require some foresight and planning. I think it could happen more often (every month?), or at random days of choice. But then there is the possibility that some poor, underpaid shmuck might lose their job because of falling revenues. What I find most offensive is not so much the $2 or $3 shops which now litter most NZ towns and cities but places like airport duty free , with their ridiculously priced handbags and gee-gaws, with have been mass produced in some factory for a tiny fraction of their retail price (Gucci, Moochi and Poochi and all that tosh). Can't for the life of me understand how waving such a bag around makes one a better person.

Generally, the best policy is to make things last as long as possible and avoid upgrading or buying shiny things just for the sake of it. We ran a Mac for nearly 10 years and I have a couple of jackets that are probably 30+ years old.

  • Hard News: iPad Impressions,

Would it be too rude to ask how much it cost? I am tempted but until my next writing cheque comes through I will continue to squint and curse at my iPod Touch.

  • Southerly: Everybody Needs Good Neighbours,

I alway remember a rather clever stunt Michael Moore pulled, where he lined up a flotilla of cars outside the HQ of one of the major US car alarm manufacturers, and set them off simultaneously.

  • Southerly: Everybody Needs Good Neighbours,

some ducks that had chanced to land in my back yard... They shit everywhere.

Ben, I could have warned you. You need to especially avoid Muscovy Ducks, which start out as yellow fluffy darlings and turn into white monsters, who see their role in life is to spray great fans of shit wherever they can (preferably indoors). They are completely deceitful as they are not actually ducks but a vile form of geese!

But I fear I am turning into one of those neighbours who make you uneasy. For months, I have been feeding two rabbits who live next door as they are not well cared for. Even went at the weekend and bought them a bale of pea straw!

  • Hard News: Wanna Route?,

And I hope all the Hamilton cyclists have been to the (fairly) new Velo Espresso in Garden Place.

Thanks, Steve. I have noticed the new addition with interest. Must cycle on down there soon. Garden Place certainly needs something like that.

I have been doing a bit of late night Tour d' France viewing and I now harbour a yearning to go see one live. What is the best one of doing that? Join the camper van mob, or get around some other way?

Wilth all the expertise here, someone might have some advice. I ride an Avanti road bike to uni most days (only minor hills on the way) . I enjoy the ride but something about my bike setup doesn't seem right as I often seem to have to push my bum backward on the saddle when I hunch forward at speed. Should the saddle be level, or tipped slightly forward or back? Should my seat be higher or lower?

And where do you get good padded cycle shorts? I tried a pair at Katmandu once, and couldn't get them above my knees!

I reckon we all should chip in and buy Jackie a bike! I would be a starter with $100.

  • Hard News: Changing the News,

Good Media 7 last night. I am organising another road trip with my students, to join the audience for the August 18 taping.

Academia, or as I like to call it "the land that wit forgot"

Too harsh, Giovanni! We enjoy a joke* as much as the next bloke/blokess--and we do have the advantage of captive audiences!

    * but the joke about Catholic priests and cheerios on 7 Days last week did border on the marginal!
