Phew!! I have found the Al Green thread (originally posted on Russell's thread where they are rabbiting on about cycling)

It being Friday arvo and all...
Back home, with my ears still ringing from the absolutely-bloody-fantastic Al Green concert at The Civic last night. I have declared to all and sundry that it is the very best concert I have ever been to--backed up the highly informed bloke at Marbeck's, who places it in his top 3. Indeed. the superb band and swooping voice of Al quite brought tears to my eyes. Great to see virtually half of the crowd up and dancing--but no encore (despite a standing ovation) and no Belle!!
So what did you think of it, Danielle?

Very, very sad. I remember seeing her in concert in Wellington with her sister years ago and I treasure their records. Such a beautiful blend of voices.

Yes, it can get confusing with so many vigorous and varied debates going on eg the Dodd piece on BDO popped in another thread, after it had been done-and-dusted in an earlier thread. Maybe we need RB to dust and rearrange the shelves, when he has an opportunity.

Just you wait--some bastard on a jet-ski* will turn up. Still, they did something like this on the south bank of the river which courses through Brisbane and it works.
*If you hate them as much as I do, you will appreciate Grant Smithies diatribe against such tool-head machines in the most recent Sunday Star-Times.

Thanks, Graeme. Confirmed for me that it was the right decision not to go to BDO this year, and has heightened the anticipation for Al Green in The Civic on Thursday.

I tend to side with Giovanni here, Ben. Fictions which persist, get retreaded and and re-worked do become our 'reality' and it is very wrong to dismiss them as 'mere entertainment'. I am not saying that you are suggesting this but some of the truly awful responses to Peter Calder's maverick review (at the Herald site) are eg how dare he say these things?/if he can't make films like Cameron, he has no right to pass judgement on them etc.
So, in Avatar, there are fictions-which-have-become-our-reality eg 'nature' vs technology; the evil corporation vs individual opposition; violence as a legitimate form of struggle; love conquers all; structures of authority and power etc. It is rather like when I introduce students to the idea of ideology as meaning/value systems. I suggest that ideological constructions of the world, and their role in our meaning-making, are inescapable. To deny the existence of ideological determinants, is an expression of ideology. This is not necessarily a depressing prospect; if you come to a clearer notion of how you form your opinions, preferences and prejudices, it can be very liberating. It can also point to the contradictions of contemporary life eg how Avatar is swelling the profits of its ultimate owner News Corporation--which, for many people, represents the epitome of corporate evil.
