  • Hard News: A Taxonomy of Poo,

"Trollops for Tyranny" and variations (The Royal Society of NZ)

Scientists do science, but fail to come up with the correct ideological result for Lindsay, and thus attract many adolescent sexual insults. Way to keep up the intellectual standards!

  • Media7: National's broadcasting policy…,

I thought I'd try something different by embedding the clips here in OurTube.

    There's also Part 2:

And Part 3, where Simon Pound investigates the southern media war ...

  • Hard News: So far from trivial,

And, like some smelly old thing your flatmate found at the tip ... in wades Garth George.

He characterises the assault as a "contretemps", speculates baselessly about provocation on the victim's part, blames the media, suggests that the victim should have been investigated for blackmail -- and winds up his column with a weirdly inappropriate biblical metaphor.

  • Island Life: Abusage,

Many an AB ballsup (or any of our professional rugby teams for that matter) have shocking handling errors, kicks or performances in general described in harsh terms like "average", "didn't have a great game", "will be disappointed with", or they simply won't even describe it at all.

You've missed the John Drake special, inevitably delivered after a player has completely lost composure and cost his team points or a penalty, or dropped the ball, or missed a tackle:

    "He's better than that."

    Well clearly, he isn't.

I agree the field of presenters is small. But reading a newsy kind of script isn't a doddle - I had a go at it for an amateur video once, and it's hard not to look like an idiot. It's like public speaking, but with every tic and flaw magnified.

Quite right. It's not easy, not everyone can do it and Veitch certainly has talent as a broadcaster (although my only direct contact with him on a story, in the 1990s, did not give me a favourable impression of his method). But people like Perigo don't seem to be able to grasp that that's irrelevant.

Let me express some sympathy for Veitch, not in the context of the assault, but simply in how the up-and-down of daily live broadcasting can mess with your head. I suspect that's what Holmes thought he was acknowledging with his enabling and misguided expressions of support for Veitch. That might provide a context, but never an excuse: you still own your own shit.

  • Hard News: Relieving Ambiguity,

The judge had to make a call on balancing the message sent by a DWC against the potential for great loss to IT security. Punishments handed down by the courts for relatively insignificant crimes aren't meant to turn into a lifetime sentence that has detrimental effects on wider society, but that's what you appear to be demanding.

I assume the fact that both the defence and the police supported a DWC had a lot to do with the decision.

  • Hard News: Relieving Ambiguity,

Finlayson has definitely been making encouraging noises. Those with plenty of free time should read his inaugural arts speech from last yea

Although I fear our views diverge on a number of social issues, Finlayson is probably my favourite National MP. He's intelligent and he knows what he's talking about. It will be interesting to see how many lesser talents he gets to vault if National has the opportunity to choose a Cabinet.
