  • Hard News: Consumer,

OTOH, I don't own an ipod or anything like it, and I would like to know which would be the best one to have, really. An mpeg player would be best since most of my extensive music collection is on my PC drive, specifically on my WMP. Help, please?

What format is the music on your PC in? If they're Windows Media files, they won't play on your iPod; MP3s will. (WM files can be converted, of course.)

If you're loving your MacBook, then you should absolutely just get an iPod. No other player will come with software that works as easily and seamlessly as iTunes does. Fiona just connects hers for a couple of minutes every morning to get new daily podcasts for the bus journeys.

I don't think you need an iPod touch, unless you also want to pay a premium to browse the internet via wi-fi. Just go for an iPod Nano; a 4GB one is $219. If you just want something that has some songs on it, a screen-less 1GB iPod Shuffle is $79.

  • Hard News: Consumer,

    @Stephen

The iPhone is beautiful, and beautifully made. And the applications -- I downloaded NetNewsWire and it's fantastic. And there are dozens -- soon hundreds, then thousands -- more to come. Another gravy train is leaving the station and once again I'm not on board...

Good review in NBR too, dude.

Plus, Shazam works! The idea is that you use it to identify some song you hear playing - you start the app, hold it up to the radio, and it gets back to you 30 seconds later with the track information.

Leo and I tried four songs. Shazam got Dan Le Sac and Scroobius Pip and the Clash's 'Guns of Brixton', but missed an obscure Amy Winehouse remix. That's pretty cool.

And I'm so not a mobile device guy, but the new iPhone is a great piece of engineering.

Yes, I find the lack of MMS bewildering, but Safari on the iPhone is way ahead of any other mobile web browser I've seen.

I did try a Blackberry. I hated the fucking thing.

  • Hard News: Consumer,

I've ever owned I have given away on replacement, given away to someone who makes good use of it, sometimes for years.

Me too. They were inadequate for my do-the-latest-thing-now requirements, but they still worked.

I still kind of regret selling my LC 575 to Chris Bourke, for him to write the Crowded House book on. That was the last good Mac for quite a while. Apple's mid-90s FAIL on quality control was trying even for us fanboys.

  • Hard News: So far from trivial,

Don't be disingenuous Ian, it went more like this:

I accuse you. You did not deny it, In fact you admitted a lot of it. Therefore you are guilty.

I'm more of the: "You had the opportunity to clear up what happened; your side of the story would have been prominently conveyed on every news service in the country. And yet you settled for a two-word euphemism."

Perhaps he slapped her and she stepped back and fell onto the corner of the dressing table.

Yes, of course, let's just make things up ...

On the other hand, before Veitch's press conference, the Dom Post stated as fact that Veitch repeatedly kicked his partner as she lay on the floor. They appear to have their original source, plus a Vodafone workmate who testified to the grievous impact on the victim:

Veitch, 34, has made no comment on the secret payout and the 2006 assault, in which he repeatedly kicked Ms Dunne-Powell, fracturing her vertebrae in four places and inflicting a head injury.

She spent months away from her job as Vodafone's general manager of marketing, had a breakdown and was later forced to quit work.

A former Vodafone colleague said Veitch had kicked his former lover as she lay on the floor of his bedroom. "He kicked her so hard he broke four vertebrae ... She couldn't walk.

"She went from a lovely sporty girl to someone who lost a lot of back muscle. She was seriously weakened."

Not a word of anything the paper reported has been denied, despite the staging of a press conference, which one would think would be the ideal place to do so.

There has been a good deal of effort put into imagining more benign explanations for these serious injuries. I think the most straightforward explanation is that what the newspaper has reported is basically true.

  • Readers' Tips,

Here's one from Leo: and it's a good 'un!

If your XBox 360 boots up with the dreaded flashing red ring of death, you don't necessarily have to send it off and hope it can be revived.

First, try turning it on, swaddling it in towels and leaving it that way for about 20 minutes.

Take the towels off, restart the Xbox, and , with any luck, it will be fixed. (You may have to turn it off again to let it cool if the fans are gong nuts.)

I know it's not in the same league as killing your own food or anything, but he just did it -- and it worked!

PS: I take no responsibility if you try this and something goes horribly wrong.

"morality, integrity, decency and respect for others"

But, but, but... isn't that what sport is about? Good clean healthy instillation of moral virtue into the corpore sano on the playing fields of Eton?

This is, of course, the paper that once loudly brayed "Mark Todd owes us all an explanation", after Todd was caught in a compromising, but benign situation by a British tabloid.

Okay, this just in from a reliable source ...

Paul Holmes is doing THE interview with Veitch for this coming Herald On Sunday. This is the man who, according to Drinnan, helped draft Veitch's apology to the nation.

It was a 3 hour interview with Veitch. In which Veitch made certain 'admissions'. It is being transcribed by a secretary so Paul can write it up. The original tape will then be destroyed - and Shayne Currie doesn't get to see the transcript or have the tape.

It is a nice ethical issue, huh.

The redemptions just come sooner and sooner these days ...
