  • Hard News: The Mood,

Speaking of misogyny in blogland, a frequent Kiwiblog commenter who calls himself "goodgod" has outed himself as a seriously nasty individual.

His comments on the Tony Veitch case:

The last time I heard of someone I knew that gave their wife a good kicking, he found her in bed with another man. The bloke got a kicking too. Betrayal of that magnitude sends some people over the edge. There’s always a reason for a kicking, even if you’re a P addict. Who was this “lovely sporting girl”? At the moment, the media are portraying it as Veitch coming home to happy innocent blameless sporty girl, going up to the bedroom and saying” Hi honey!” and then he starts kicking. Utter Rubbish.

It is not good enough to just sit back with a popular liberal outlook muttering to yourself “It doesn’t matter what she did, it doesn’t matter what she was, it doesn’t matter, it doesn’t matter…” In good journalism, examination of the facts must not take a back seat to preconcieved ideology.

Tell the whole story and let the reader decide. If you’re going to invent gasps of horror on one person, set them on the other too. Tell us if she was a slut or a shrew and not just that Vietch was is an abusive mental case. Tell us why she was kicked. I’m not awarding her a title of innocence victim as a default or immunity from examination without hearing the whole story first.

I hope that man lives alone.

  • Cracker: I don't just read the…,

I hadn't really paid attention to the ad, and vaguely assumed that it was a real company because the name came up at the end.

Then when it became a controversy, I looked straight at it, and it was immediately obvious that it was talent, rather than real people.

Which I actually think is a bit of a shame. It would have been way more meta if the agency had actually found the talent in situ and spent two months rehearsing them. It would have been a media story to tell, and in the era where Stars in Their Eyes gets to air, kinda zeitgeisty.

I'd have been impressed by that.

Which is going to make an already jam-packed show utterly incomprehensible.

How can you be that hostile to your viewers then complain about TV piracy?

But more exciting still is the increasing use of construction methods such as walls made of polystyrene sandwiched between two sheets of gyprock - cheap, mostly made of recyclables, easy to assemble, ready insulated ...

    Hey, what could go wrong?

Surely the fact that TV2 is getting teh Torchwood out is a sign of the end times? I feel like I've been waiting forever. Thanks for the good news!

Poneke is pissed off that after waiting so long to screen it, they've buried it at 10.30pm. And then they'll act surprised when Season 1 doesn't go well ...

1/ What happens to all those plastic milk bottles that go out every Tuesday in Kingsland for recycling? Some say they just get sent to the land fill, others say they are chopped up and sent to fuel China's thermal power stations.

I think that's a myth, but plastic recycling certainly ain't all it's cracked up to be.

I thought that supermarket plastic bags were already biodegradable. My problem is, if they're phased out, what will I line my kitchen rubbish bin with? Will I have to buy custom made bin liners?

I gather that when there was a project to cut back on single-use plastic bags in Ireland, bin-liner sales jumped 400%.

__That’s if you haven’t already downloaded it from teh internets, put it on a flash drive and played it on your 32-inch widescreen LCD TV via your PS3.__

Or made use of the excellent TVersity software and streamed it "live" over wifi straight off your puter through PS3 to TV. Take THAT flash drives...

And if you're still, like, watching TV -- commit yourself to the new season of Doctor Who from Sunday. It is teh awesome.

Yup: there wasn't even a plausible explanation for Zack's fall into the dark side. The Master's apparently impeccable logic was undone in about 30 seconds and Zack just sort of went "oh, okay ..." and told them where to find the bad guy, who turned out to be just some guy.

It really was "shit! how fast can we get out of this lame story arc!?"

One thing I'll miss: watching Bones in HD on the Freeview box. Most of TV3's HD offerings aren't to my taste, but that was good enough to lick.

  • Hard News: The Mood,

The odiousness of Slater is unbelievable. David almost certainly has cleaner hands than him, but I still find it remarkable that he continues to have any association with him.

I've been wondering about this. Slater's misogyny is so weird and so constant I wonder if he has a personality disorder. His posts (and, in particular, one he linked to) on the England rugby team allegations were simply vile. Ditto his repeated online comments about a woman standing for Labour in this election.

And banal, too. Many winger bloggers appear to be trapped in an arrested adolescence: Slater is trapped at puberty.

And yet, as you say, people are happy to buddy up with him. You may have noticed that Bridget Saunders is now channelling his "tips" in her gossip pages. Perhaps someone should ask her about the company she keeps.
