  • Hard News: Big Norms,

I didn't get to hear Nandor's speech but have just seen some of it on the NZ Herald site; classy. Parliament is much poorer for his departure.

It's available in full on the home page here:

I'm never going to agree with Nandor on everything, but I respect him as someone who's prepared to think, rather than simply react.

  • Hard News: Big Norms,

    Lyndsay Freer HMM.

So she stood in fellowship with her muslim brothers and sisters over the danish cartoons.

Hope she's not expecting the favour to be returned.

Perhaps you should consult the newspapers rather than your own prejudices then.

The NZ Muslim Council publicly pitched in behind the Catholics over the 'Bloody Mary' episode of South Park.

The Scientologists on the other hand ... well, nobody loves them ...

  • Island Life: Hunting Squirrels,

So Chicago school style free trade has gotten a thumbs up from the posters on NZ's preeminent leftie blog!! How times change!! Never would have been the case 20 or even 10 years ago, but this would seem to be evidence that the laws of economics prevail over time. Cause for optimism indeed!

James, I've been a rules-based free-trader for a long time, and I think you'll find that most of the people who comment here don't cling to any boilerplate ideology.

It always amuses me when I see myself or Public Address being decried as "extreme left" on some wingnut blog. The funny thing is that the Nielsen demographic for Public Address is a wee bit more upscale than those for certain other online champions of enterprise. I hugely admire the company that Don Christie has built, for instance. And I certainly want to succeed financially. I just take the view that there's no need to be a dick about it.

Typical chardonnay socialist, I guess ;-)

  • Hard News: A little understanding,

Oh, and while I was looking at Stu Page's channel, I found this:

A little video for one of my favourite Clean songs, 'Outside the Cage', compiled from various sources.

  • Hard News: Google Trending and MGMT,

pretty hard to travel with that lot unless you've got a nice mum who lets you store em at her house.

My problem with physical media is that the disc ends up on the pile/shelf and you lose touch with it. I can fit most of what I might ever want to hear on the 80GB iPod Classic I bought for $328.

OTOH, need to sort out that vinyl->digital thing ...

That's how I bought my rare discs. sent away for them.

And there was certainly something special about that. And even knowing when your hip record store was going to get that special shipment in, and grabbing what you could afford. A lot of that vinyl was lovely to behold.

But the main thing is the music.

I wonder what a good review on Pitchforkmedia sells?

You take that and multiply it by the free Pitchfork sampler on Emusic ...

  • Hard News: Big Norms,

Lyndsay Freer is definately a good spokesperson for the church.

Yes, not least because she gives lie to the impression conveyed by certain other people who purport to represent Christians that being a believer means being stranded from the rest of the culture.

Also, as a couple of people said to me (and Lyndsay, if you're reading this, I mean it in a good way), she looks like a Sopranos wife.

  • Island Life: Hunting Squirrels,

I just knew that chump James Belich was a fraud, thanks Mr Key. Bring on Sinclair, King and all those other faux-historians too!

I keep coming back to this. Key repeatedly gets away with brainfarts because he's the leader of an opposition facing a government the public and (probably more importantly) journalists are tired of.

Given that he's odds-on to lead the next government, he's going to have to solve his brainfart problem, or face a bit more strife after November.

In short, if you're the incumbent government and you actually have a positive story to tell, why don't you do it?

Because people will say (cf: the Star Times on Sunday): "Thanks. Pretty good job. Next please!"

    That's their real problem.

  • Hard News: Spectacular but useless,

Maybe I should take up smoking dope. I mean, if nothing else gets me in the next 812,533 years, I'd rather die of being stoned than from the sun exploding?

How does it work out if you're stoned and then the sun explodes?

I'm sure that happened to me once.
