Hi folks. As promised, here are the links to this week's Media7, featuring a panel discussion on the police's PR wars with former detective inspector Graham Bell, longtime police reporter (and now academic) Dominic Andrae, and investigative reporter Phil Kitchin.

    And the YouTube version.

It was a pretty useful discussion.

The guy was able to walk around and go to the toilet after he was shot, it's pretty clear the end result should have been better.

That kind of made me think the opposite. We're talking about some minutes' gap between assembly and entry, and the poor man died hours later in hospital.

People are assuming that if the police charged in unarmed at first opportunity, he'd have lived -- but that's really not clear.

  • Island Life: I am not a quitter,

I agree! There are a very few fundamental truths. I think the ones we can agree on are:
    Do not murder.

Assuming we're talking about murder as defined in the law, no.

    Do not commit adultery.

I am in a loving relationship of 20 years' standing (actually nearly 30 if you could when we firstmet) and I place a very high value on fidelity and the respect that underlies it. But should it be right up there with murdering another human? No.

    Do not steal

If you're genuinely hungry, steal away, especially if there is not a direct personal victim. Following a "do not steal" edict to the point where you extinguish yourself makes neither moral or practical sense.

, and Do not commit perjury.

We lie a little bit to each other every day. A world where we did not would be conceivable, just very different.

Next week Media7 had best have representatives from the Small Retaillers association and the liquor industry on to ask what PR is required to point out the lack of causation between alcohol and crime.

You're suggesting there isn't a link between alcohol and crime?

The last shooting death of a police officer was DC Taylor 2002.

I mentioned that case to Graham Bell in this week's Media7 (I'll post the links tomorrow). He noted that Taylor actually knew the shooter.

Unsaid: that that might have been what encouraged DC Taylor to think he could go around protocol and approach the kid directly. Taylor's colleagues, the poor bastards, had to look at his dead body lying outside the house for hours afterwards until the subsequent standoff ended.

  • Island Life: The longest last time,

I've been thinking about what makes this post so affecting: apart, obviously, from the heart-rending subject.

It's the syntax. The rhythm, the use of the colon before all speech, the parts of conversation. It captures the episodic, slightly-out-of-time experience of an occasion where no one can feel they measure up to what has happened. I read it and felt like I was there.

Sometimes, David, those of us who pay the rent with words can use them to do the important jobs.

Yikes. I'm teary-eyed in a busy Wellington cafe. People will talk.

What a great piece of writing.

and I think I’m getting an understanding that our police have a system where it is better for 100 civilians to die than for a policeman to cop it

What happened was awful. But for goodness sake, the police didn't shoot the guy. And missing from all the reports is any information on whether Navtej Singh would actually have lived had the police charged in on arrival. He didn't die at the scene.

You're talking about 26 minutes from the time the first emergency call was placed to the police entering the store. It wasn't until 15 mins after the call that they were actually able to confirm someone had been shot, and they were in the store 11 mins after that.

It's worth noting that the ambulance service was making no apologies for the wait. They didn't want their people dead either.
