So I (discretely) asked a couple of grad students in my lab how much they bought it for - they said they wouldn't pay over $40 a point.

    Maybe there's an Auckland bubble.

Who knows? Although I suspect a point is a malleable measure.

But your story does illustrate something else: you can smoke some meth of a weekend and still be a grad student. It's just that the particular combination of drug and means of administration has a regrettably high hit rate in creating addicted munters.

People have been swallowing, snorting and injecting various amhetamines for generations now. Life goes on. But methamphetamine, smoked, is just a bit too nice for some people.

  • Indiana Jonesing,

I get a bit grumpy with the collective madness of the pundocracy but the good news is they are way out of touch with Democrat voters - 64 percent of whom want the race to continue.

On the other hand, a Pew survey on the same day found: "A majority (51%) of Democratic and Democratic-leaning voters now says the undecided nomination contest is bad for the party, up from 27% in late February. "

Be well keen on hearing the NZoA debate on 7 but don't have freeview. Any chance of youtubing it ?

It's on YouTube and in various formats via TVNZ. I'll link to it all on Thursday.

ast night's 'expose' was a bit silly - he was buying meths and isopropyl alcohol - they're common solvents for lots of things - he didn't end up buying the one thing that's actually hard to get (a used-to-be-over-the counter cold remedy) that was never sole at your local 4-square

    That's absurd.

I'm pretty sure I heard Owen claim that P sells for $1000 dollars a gram. Now I have little to no experience with the stuff, but since cocaine retails for about a third of that price and has to be smuggled in from the western hemisphere while P can be mixed up by anyone with a bathtub and a rubber hose I'm not sure Ms Owen has the facts on her side this time.

She was correct. Pure methamphetamine sells for up to $1000 a gram, and the standard retail serving, a tenth of a gram "point", is $100. The yield from a packet of decongestants is staggering; hence its powerful appeal as a business opportunity.

The confusion lies in the fact that old-fashioned "speed" is cut roughly 8 to 1 with glucose.

  • OnPoint: Media beat-off,

It's like a hammer - you really need to know what it does, when to use it, and when not to.

Sometimes, you need a sonic screwdriver.

Russell, is there any way we can read Paul Holmes' winning columns or are they not available on the net? It hurts me physically to think he won a national writing award.

It shouldn't, really. I wouldn't say he's my favourite columnist, but he writes authentically and with some heart. You know what he's said when you finish reading. I'll happily read him, which I can't say for Laws or Martin Devlin.

And I'm with Jolisa over the Austrian cellar dweller gibe - I've seen the odd mild joke about that awful affair that was (just) on the fair side of the decency/comedy line, but directly impugning the education of a girl imprisoned and raped for decades to make your (already offensive) point is so far beyond the pale of any culture I can identify.

I've been thinking about line that today. I'm more shocked that no editor had the good sense and decency to yank it out.

  • Indiana Jonesing,

Oh god. You keep waiting for shit to implode when an angry gay man links to a feminist.

FWIW, I think Ellen Malcolm's column is fine, except insofar as it ignores the actual tone of the Clinton campaign lately. I don't think she's arguing for any special rights.

So, yeah, one serious bonus of the eventual Clinton concession is that it will let AmericaBlog calm the fuck down ...
