  • Indiana Jonesing,

using insurance industry and Republican tactics to attack her health reform policies.

You're accusing Obama of "using Republican tactics"?

But it's not the same thing. There is a genuine range of opinion on the respective heath plans.

With the gas-tax thing Hillary has taken up a policy position that even she knows is bullshit. She hasn't been able to find a single economist from anywhere on the political spectrum -- or even anyone in her own party who isn't on her campaign -- so she goes to war on economists.

And yes the tax holiday is not a great idea - but this is poltics, it's what Clark is doing wiht fuel prices here.

It isn't.. I have some misgivings about Labour's action there, but they're delaying the introduction of a surtax -- that's quite different to presenting a six-month "holiday" on fuel taxes as something that will benefit ordinary people, rather than, as would inevitably be the case, actually increase prices at the pump once the "holiday" is over.

  • Indiana Jonesing,

How about Hilary sounding as though she was just a home town girl from the mid west on Morning Report today. I love her new accent

Yeah, that was a very funny clip. I wonder who goes around afterwards and picks up all the G's she drops ...

  • Indiana Jonesing,

It is the same thing. For anyting stupid you can bring up about the Clinton campaign I can match it with something from Obama's.

Stupider than the gas-tax gambit? Have a go then ...

  • Hard News: Track to the Future,

I think you're being disingenous here and should just concede the point gracefully.

My apologies -- I'd forgotten saying that.

To address it, my point was that you were depicting Cullen's failure to go the whole way and acquire all of Tranz Rail in 2003 as a costly blunder. I just don't think anyone was saying that at the time.

  • Indiana Jonesing,

I'm tired of the pandering from both sides - Hilary knocking back the shots was right down there with Obama going bowling.

I'm not sure they're the same thing at all. They all do photo-ops, but Clinton has had surrogates actively peddling the whisky-drinkin' meme as recently as this week.

It's part of a new faux personality that included her parading as some sort of gun-rights champion, which was absurd given her legislative record, and most recently the utterly idiotic gas-tax posturing.

  • Indiana Jonesing,

    Update from TPM:

First-time voters helped fuel Obama's victory: According to exits, the 18 percent in the state who said it was their first time voting in a primary favored Obama overwhelmingly, 68%-26%.

But so is dogged reporting and I certainly stand on my record of breaking many of the significant yarns in this saga and the subsequent insider trading investigation imbroglio.

Hi Fran. Oddly enough, I was refreshing my memory of your writings this very morning. You were indeed a champ on the rail story.

But I think I was referring to revisionism in the editorial column. The former TranzRail management seemed to be recast this week as having a competence that just wasn't the case.

I do think your column today contrasting the government's move on rail with the Air NZ buyout is a wee bit disingenuous. Labour was caned by the Herald for prevaricating while it got is ducks in line, and now it is being bashed for announcing early.

And after the bailout the Herald's editorial voice did seem to question the wisdom of privatisation of companies that can't be allowed to fail -- including, possibly, rail.

That was three weeks after it said: "The one form of assistance the Government must not give, even now, is a financial bail-out. State shareholding in Air New Zealand and the likelihood of Government-appointed directors are not what the airline needs."

Essentially, the Air NZ buy-back faced as much hostility as the rail one has.

  • Indiana Jonesing,

    Just so, Russell.

However, racism against Obama doesn't justify sexism against Clinton, and sexism against Clinton doesn't justify racism against Obama. Both are reprehensible

OTOH, it can't be denied that gender and race are shaping the contest.

Hillary's support amongs black voters has collapsed, but she's killing Obama amongst older women voters -- who do vote.

I'm sure if I was a fiftysomething female registered Democrat, I'd feel driven to to Hillary by some of the crap I was reading about her.

  • Indiana Jonesing,

Interesting that they're comfortable calling NC this early in - suggests a hell of a victory for Obama which could be significant in such a comparatively large state.

What they'll be looking for from that is a big bump in the popular vote lead.

  • Indiana Jonesing,

Could we perhaps agree on some non-sexist epithets for Hillary then?

    ;-)
