I'm on Wainui Ave btw, one over from Meola.

Flash git. Although we South of Meola peasants did used to cackle over your especially bad broadband up North as we scavenged for food scraps and rags to wear ...

__Can you shed any light on that Russell (or any other Chevites)__

The Mt Albert exchange got upgraded to ADSL 2.0 recently (late last year I think), which could explain why you've noticed a better service.

Ah, of course. My backup DSL service went from inoperable to tolerable, and that'll be why. That's an interesting demonstration of the technical strength of ADSL2 even in conditions where it's not supposed to make much of a difference.

Totally waiting for our cabinet to be commissioned, although it'll be a tough call to dump Wired Country altogether. Especially seeing as, with all his bandwidth, my buddy Ant is still only touching 200KB/s on the BitTorrent, while mine sometimes tops 300K ...

...they darn well know the truth, but the dialup customer represents one of two markets: 1) the financially destitute, 2) the geographically remote.
    Neither are profitable for Telecom.

Or anyone else at current pricing.

So it suits them to tell non-Telecom people those customers are happy with dial-up.

I suspect they're "happy with dial-up" in the same way that many Pt Chev residents were "happy with dial-up" -- that being the sense in which it's really not worth the bother of trying to make DSL work, and dial-up might actually suck less.

The way forward for rural customers is almost certainly going to be wireless. Orcon is reselling a wireless product from its parent company Kordia, but I don't think it's cheap.

We "give them the benefit of the doubt" again and again.

Quite right. But I think the separation will actually make a difference. Telecom Wholesale will underperform if it only has one customer. I think there needs to be some pressure put on National before the election for an undertaking that it won't put away the regulatory stick and try and pretend it's the 90s again. I wouldn't put it past Maurice.

To clarify, customers of any ISP buying wholesale DSL from Telecom will get the speed boost. It does sideline unbundling, but as a punter it's hard to complain.

__and I guess we'll be waiting a (long) while before we see any of this roll-out from Telecom heading our way.__

That's kind of why I was wondering about the shiny new cabinet down the road in Otaki, which must surely be as provincial as New Plymouth! It's a rural road too.

As a high-demand area with abysmal service (thanks to a copper run of some kilometres) that's been making a hell of a lot of noise for the past year, Pt Chevalier was always going to be top of the list.

I don't know what their roadmap is, but we get 12 new cabinets and they're talking in terms of 3000 cabinets in five years, so I think the coverage will be pretty wide.

  • Hard News: New on the Street,

There a guy I know (classic start) that has issues with the rolling out of the cabinets as it doesn't answer the issue of the "last mile" which he says is the key - if the data comes shooting along to a cabinet and then gets out the Ferrari and walks the last mile to your house and you computer it's not the complete answer.

Sure, in a perfect world. But using the existing ducting to bring the fibre to local cabinets is a big interim step, and one that can be made quite quickly. Getting fibre to everyone's house is more difficult and much more expensive.

As I noted, Telecom Wholesale is open to discussing one-off fibre runs from the cabinets, which is a start.

  • Hard News: Slumpy Cashflow,

but comparing taste. we drove the sth island this past feb and stopped in alexandria for stone fruit. the better half described the nectarines as being like "eating sunshine" (and promptly ate 2kg...).

    Mmmmm.

It is quite noticeable how good farmers' market produce can be compared to stuff that's come through a supply chain. Even vege places up the Hibiscus Coast that source locally are different. Yum.

Just a word though for supermarket tomatoes. This has been the best year *ever* for them. Remember how awful they used to be, and how Kim Hill complained? This summer, decent truss tomatoes were as cheap as $4kg. And Fruitworld just had deals on tomatoes.

(My response, regrettably, was usually to erase any saving by buying craft mozzarella and laying on the good olive oil. I like buying good food, even when it's not cheap ...)

  • Hard News: Slumpy Cashflow,

This post is on a completely unrelated topic, I'm sorry, but is in response to Act's stirring of the education voucher pot on behalf of the Education Forum. I think it was Roger Douglas who came out with how social democratic Sweden has adopted a voucher system.

What got my back up immediately was Hide touting it as "a scholarship for every child". Pah.

And no, I think there's very little chance of Act favouring the Swedish safeguards.

People are both hurting and spooked, especially when they have a $300k mortgage hanging around their necks.

Alarmingly, $300k isn't a particularly large mortgage in Auckland. There will be a few people on the North Shore thinking Cromwell looks pretty good at the moment ...
