  • Hard News: Geekstravaganza,

Cricket fans might also be interested to know that Stratos is rebroadcasting this and the next test match via Freeview. It's also on Sky Sport 1, and there's a delay of a second or two on the Stratos broadcast.

Yowza - good deal from Orcon. But danged if I can open their home page at www.orcon.net.nz

Works fine for me, as does http://www.orcon.co.nz

sigh - we in Dunedin get forgotten again - maybe I should start shovelling my $$ to someone other than Orcon

I'd call up and ask when you get the bandwidth. I would think Dunedin is a big enough centre to be viable. Rural unbundling won't happen, otoh -- it looks like wireless is the only solution there.

Oh, and Bartlett also affirmed that Orcon has a voice in the peering wrangle, the resolution of which would certainly address problems with the achilles heel of local broadband offerings -- the cost of international traffic.

He seemed to think it was more a matter of Telecom coming to its senses and resuming open peering at the local internet exchanges than a regulatory solution.

    Thanks Jim,

Finally, it’s an interesting point about the name. We never considered calling it Russell. Perhaps next time.

I'd like to you consider "Colin". It works very well for our somewhat famous cat, and I'm confident someone could reverse-engineer a good acronym into it.

__The 3 pm news said that Key says National will scrap the 700m fund.__

He would use the money to lower taxes apparently.
Oh man, really? Did he/Teh News actually say the "lower taxes" bit or is that some slightly cheeky presumption?
Cause if so that's dropped his stock in my books. By quite a bit.

The brief Checkpoint report didn't mention the taxes part, so I'll take that as license.

But he's still insisting, after having seen the official papers that say different, that only the interest on the fund will be available. He's basically holding that black is white. And he is saying that they'll cancel the fund.

And he has no alternative policy to offer. They've jumped the shark. Really.

Thanks Bart -- you probably knew I was angling for yourinput when I asked those questions. I appreciate your knowledge and your frankness.

Can't muster much more in the way of a response right now. Too busy playing with my just-in-the-country-and-not-quite-ready-for-your-Mum to-use Freeview PVR (a Topfield).

The thing I'm most interested in is getting files off the thing (something you can't do with the MySky), but I can't do that until I can download an application and driver, and I can't do that until I can get the PVR to talk to my router ...

Damn, it's hot behind the entertainment rack. Will blog in the morning ...

So they're basically looking at providing $50-70m a year, topped up with whatever interest they're earning early on in the fund. I imagine that won't be evenly spread though, weighted more towards the end.

Yep, that was what Clark indicated. Draw-downs would be fairly modest in the first few years and would increase as research comes online.

"...Also, it looks like John Banks has actually done something..."

I was stunned at that as well! I just hope he gets his wife to start the car for him in the morning from now on.

Yikes. But yes, he has gone up considerably in my estimation.

And the CitRats have confirmed they're as duplicitous as ever.

And what the hell is up with Auckland City executives?

    dc_red:

Re: Fonterra. Given the success you speak of RB, do you have any sense of whether it really requires this, um, subsidy?

    And Shep:

But before any of this happens including paying off the mortgaged farms. Fonterra will be based closer to its markets in even lower wage economies than NZ.

Fonterra is now operating farms in China, and I think it's a done deal that it will increasingly produce in or near its major markets.

But the smart strategy is to keep the intellectual property here, in New Zealand, because the big dairy company is the closest thing we're likely to have to our own Nokia. That's why I was interested in the IP question, to which there doesn't yet seem to be an answer.
